I'm going to use the switch on the side for the back-up lights and not for the nutraul safty switch.
Have you done this yet? How would you go about doing it?

So, if I don`t have a back up switch, then I won`t have reverse lights?

Also, where did you get the shifter boot?

What mouting spot did you use on the bracket?

In the instructions, it says if you use the front mount, then some tail kit or something was needed:confused:

I would like to get it as close to the little "oval" in the tranny hump, and not have it hit the dash when I`m in park, and not hit my seat when in 1st

I haven't hooked up reverse lights yet. But it would just be a matter of adjusting the switch to "close" when your in reverse and hook up the green/blue wires from truck.

The shifter boot is from a sm465 in my garage, that's why it lines up perfect with the oval hole.

If you look at my pics you can see what mounts I used. All the way forward, but I didn't see the need for that adapter. Also, the mount for the end of the tranny I installed "backwards". This gave a few more inches of forward movement.

Mine is mounted just off-center of the factory hole. In park it's about 3-4 inches from the dash. If I had a banch seat first gear might be an issue but drive would be fine.

Not sure what you mean by installing it backwards, or the shifter being an issue when in first, being so short and all....

GMC4CW, what mounting spot did you use, it is hard to tell from your pics....

there is a bracket that mounts to the end of the trans. In the instuctions it is supposed to piont towards the rear of the truck. I turned it to point forward giving me more length of the mounting plate. If you look at my bracket at the end of the trans and the other pics in this thread you can see the differnce.

When you pull the shifter all the way back into first it could hit a bench seat if your running a suburban. I have buckets so it's no problem. The shifter is 16" but has enough movement to hit a bench seat.

Okay, do you have any pics of it in 1st gear?

Also, how do I make the switch "close" when in reverse? I wonder if I`ll need the NS switch for state inspection...

Also, did reversing that bracket allow you to use the existing hole for the 4 speed in the tranny hump?

The last set of pics I posted shows it in first and park to give an idea of range on it. On the right side of the shifter you can see a small switch at the pivot point. There is a ball that finds the right hole to allow it to close the circut at the right position. Yes, I belive you need a NS safty switch on an auto trans to pass any state inpsection.

Yes, reversing the bracket allowed me to use the factory hole. The mount would have been too short to reach the hole otherwise.

Cool, thanks...So it looks like if I use this shifter, I`m going to have to get a back up switch, any recomendations?

I wonder, if I do the same as you did with the bracket, reverse it, so I can use the 4 speed hole, if I`ll have any issues with my 23" nostalgia shifter, ie hitting dash, or the floor:crazy: :D I`m also running buckets, so that isn`t a problem...

That's why I didn't get the 23" shifter. Lokar makes another switch, I think, so you can have both hooked up on one shifter.

because if you put in that location, then there will be some issues?

That's what I was thinking, but I would have to get one to know for sure.

hmmm, well, I`ll have to wait and hear from GMC4CW, as he`s running the 23" Nostalgia as well.....

I replaced my shifter lever and will ship it to anyone who wants to see if they like how it looks. There is a post in the classified section.

I wired mine off a lighted switch on the dash. 2 reasons. reason one being thats the legal way to do it in pa if it's not activated by the shifter. reason two being then you can run your backups on the trail at night even when you are going forward.

now I have nothing hooked up, but the truck is trail only.
so, you wired the back up lights to a switch in the dash? so you had to turn the switch on to get reverse lights?

Has anybody have any experience with Gennie brand shifters. They don't use a pushbutton on the top. Theirs are side detent instead. Looks like about the same money. www.gennieshifter.com nothing against Lokar just being different.

YES.

for it to be legal in PA for inspection the switch needs to have a light in it when the backup lights are on.

from what I saw they were more money by about 25% and I personally do not like the idea of side detents. mine is very comfortable to use offroad. having to swing the top of the shifter side to side to get from reverse to first would suck. now I just hold the button down and row the lever all day if I want. I really like the bracketry that Lokar uses. what Gennie is using looks cheap and the 700 only attaches in 2 places where my Lokar has 4 atachment points.

Of course I am using a hotrod shifter in an offroad truck. its not built for that and Gennie didn't take that into account. Its not designed to be constantly changing gears. the Lokar works and looks good.

I like that Gennie offers stainless but thats not going to overcome the shift pattern. you could grind out the detents on a Gennie, but you can also adjust the shift knob on a Lokar to lock out the detents. I have done it. then its really easy to change gears. simply screw the shift knob down more. when you are done wheeling and want it to stay in park, unscrew the knob some.
