Looking for transmission advice, TH350 or SM465

I replace far more automatic transmissions than clutches.

Martin

This is my observation looking over my family's fleet. Even though there are more stick shifts, they still have had a lower failure rate.

I won't say that autos have no strengths or that they can't be good, just that their track record to this point has not been as good as the manuals.

So your reasoning as to why manuals are better than autos are.....They are stronger, have less problems, cheaper to fix, give you more control, do the same thing as autos, harder to use, makes you more of a man (Cause as we all know only women and limp wristed men drive autos)

So by following this reasoning....I'm sure all of you have replaced your power steering with manual steering right?.....Let me take a shot in the dark and say no you haven't. Why not?....They are stronger, alot cheaper to rebuild, have alot less problems (I see very week someone having a problem with PS, be it a belt or them over heating, leaks, etc, etc) Most defiantly harder to drive with, gives you more feel of the road, and you can't drive them with weak wrists (In fact, they will give you big manly hairy forearms)

Now I think about.....Same holds true for AC in your truck too..:D

Its all about what you intend to do with the truck, which kind of transmission is "best"...if you like rowing through gears and clutching even in heavy stop & go city traffic, tow anything,or like popping the clutch to do a burnout,a manual transmission is hard to beat..
They are simple,no complex hydraulics or bands to fail unexpectedly and leave you stranded and generally live longer than automatics..

Chances are good your truck will move when you put a manual in gear and let off the clutch, while an automatic can work fine one minute, and refuse to propel the truck the next when one of a hundred parts or valves decide to die..

Some things though, they are not great at--like when you go to start off from a stop on a hill, without letting the truck roll back any,and its been proven a truck with an automatic can pull a dead weight from a dead stop better than a manual,I recall seeing a test film in school where they chained a locomotive to a pickup truck and tried towing it down the tracks, and the automatic transmission equipped truck did it without much strain, while the truck with a manual had to be wound up and the clutch popped in granny low several times, before the truck succeeded in moving the locomotive..

Me,I prefer an automatic for plowing for reasons I stated already..but do I enjoy knowing the automatic might decide to take a :poo: rather unexpectedly ?..a resounding "NO" is the answer...though I liked manuals,I did not like them much in city traffic ,especially in the hilly town I used to live in...

Nope.

I also like hydraulic clutches.

I hooked my garden sprinkler up and set it under my truck to get the mud off so I can actually see what the hell is going on down there.

no fun in that...

i just go find a nice deep set of puddles in whooptie doos and go all baja out...

I dont have AC... just 1 wing window and the 2 floor dampers... oh and a hole where the clutch rod used to go through before hydro (and the hole is bigger as the cab didnt have the hole and i was a young kid that just used a drill and made holes till it worked)...

side note..
so you all are saying women and limp wrists and the sort... now yous guys really got me holding out on really putting the jeep steering shaft in my truck. I dont want my steering to go "Limp Wristed" on me....

also driving my truck last week to work I think im low on fluid. I noticed it get louder at about mile 55 of my commute home. so gonna drain both xfer and trans and replace with 80w90 and hopefully all gets good. if it was my turbo400 id be doing more than just replacing the oil...

Yep. Here is one of my rigs. Manual everything, no need for brake boost or air conditioning or hydro clutch or power steering or power locks. And forget about power windows. I even have a manual starting crank for when I'm feeling the need to be overly manly. No limp wrists here (unless it swings around and smacks ya when it starts ).

Works like a charm, and I'd never want it to be an auto. But, with sod lugs and a top speed of 11MPH, it's downright miserable on the highway. :haha:

Different machines for different purposes. Each has its advantage. Neither transmission style is the answer to every type of situation. :deal:

^^^ NICE RIG!!!!!

side question... i see in your SIG... 3 x 6.2L (diesel?), 2 x auto and 1x manual but...
3x 208's

why 208's? just curious.... i know 205 is always wanted and 241? too?

Thanks. My rigs are pretty close to stock at this point, and, yes, they're all diesel. They came with 208s stock, and that's what they still have. One is a street rig, one is a camping rig, and the third one has been in a perpetual state of disrepair. I don't have much experience off roading, and I'm a gentle driver in general, so I'm not afraid of breaking things. And crawlers switching from the 2.61 reduction of the 208 to the 1.96 reduction of the 205 sounds like a step in the wrong direction unless you're prone to cracking cases. My rigs are so far away from that risk that I see no reason to change it. The 208 is just fine for my needs.

The 241 seems to be good all around but they aren't as common as the other cases for right-hand drop rigs.
