Looks like I found a toy (totaled, now gone)

M1009 k5 blazer. Simple build to become the offroad toy
Auxiliary fuse block wiring ran and a few things wired up now. Air compressor, and 3 sets of wires up to the dash area for 12 volt plugs. Once the other plugs are added to the dash area then the fuses will be installed.

Couple more things done today. Secondary oil cooler for the trans along with a external filter for it, and a filter/cooler for the power steering system as well.

Picked up a few J hooks to give a place for securing the highlift. The J's have sharp 90 degree turns which keeps the jack from moving easily. Also the missing pin was on the floor in the pic.

That should take care of the regular cargo now. Might change the organization to eliminate the ammo cans (tow strap, jumper cables, tools, winch stuff).

Since this is the backup vehicle while the crew cab is down and I sold the military wrecker awhile ago, I've been in dire need of a way to lift heavy stuff with ability to reach high when needed. Plus a way to pull my little gooseneck when it's not fully loaded if absolutely necessary would be good (hell no it's not the primary tow rig it's only a 1/2 ton k5). Came up with the plan for a gin pole that can be used by multiple vehicles and added a gooseneck hitch to the k5 mostly as a anchor for the support chains.

There's 3 sets of legs. Shortest and lightest set is about 8ft long total (axles from the tow dolly on the wrecker). Middle and longest ones are the crane support legs from the old military wrecker, 10ft with just the upper legs and a full 18ft at max. As far as weight goes, the k5 can handle about 1500 lbs using the poles. Last 2 pics are from attempting to test lift the welder (2000 lbs) and the k5 couldn't do it, front end was going airborne. Angle iron used for the gooseneck mount is 5x3x5/16".

You should do some adjustable rear suspension lockouts so that all that weight isn't flattening out your rear springs when you use it.

Maybe you should just get crackin on building some hyd stab jacks for the back like the big heavy duty wreckers run.

Haha maybe for the crew cab but not this little guy. It's role is offroad toy and backup vehicle. K5 is getting the attention this summer because it's mods are much cheaper than finishing the crew cab. That truck has the primary lifting and work capabilities whereas the k5 is just filling in the gap as best as it can for now.

Finally got around to testing out the alternator welder today. Pretty sure the quick connects are causing connection problems so will remove them another day and see if it improves. Also the alternator needs a better mount, under a load (welding) the belt starts to squeak so I think the mount is flexing enough to be a problem. Does weld though. Revved up until cranking out 95 volts and was able to burn through 7018 3/32" rod and 6011 1/8" rod well enough for me to prove that my ark welding capability has gone to shit hahaha.

Had to move the trailer around to get the Miller Big 40 Diesel welder off. With that off, the k5 top gone, and a brake controller the k5 would be able to handle it if needed. Have about 1 1/2" before the rear axle touches the bump stops, trailer weight in the 6-7k pounds range (trailer is only 6" C channel, 2 5k axles).

That short wheelbase might be fun if the trailer wanted to get squirrely ever though.

Agreed. Towed with my old 79 k5 multiple times and the crew cab is much better. Hopefully never have to use it to tow the trailer (rather have the k5 as the cargo), but if needed it will be capable of doing it.

That figures. Something punched a hole in the radiator while on the highway today.

Got it towed to the lot and fired it up real quick after it had time to cool down. Appears to run normal and it puked more coolant out while it was running so think I got it shut down before any overheating occurred (hopefully).

Got lucky with the radiator damage and have been driving/wheeling the k5 since then, even a road trip down to Texas haha. Interesting little problem today. Exploring some of the easy trails around American Fork Canyon today when I started hearing a loud/heavy banging noise under the hood. Guess the sheetmetal isn't up to the task of the second battery mount (the one in the corner behind the lights). Ripped the mounts out of the fender, and ripped the core support where the fenderwell attaches to it. So this thing is down to 1 battery now.

First time having this problem on a square body but this truck has always had overly large batteries (military followed by the big group 48's) and has spent alot of it's life offroad.

Thank you for sharing.

Any chance you can tell me what roof rack that is, and how it’s attached? Or photos of it? I’ve been considering one for a while.

It was home built by either the previous owner or fire department. Uses 4 mounting points with a total of 8 bolts straight to the roof. Not sure if I'm going to keep it to use on the crew cab or get rid of it.

Really?

Even the nerf you got from behind in Moab did less damage

Little more looking and that scooby did WAY MORE than the little bump to get me unstuck haha. That didn't even dent the tailgate (which wasn't worried if it did anyways). "I'm stuck!" thump "Nevermind I'm free" haha.

The scooby hit the k5 at the top of a hill, speared right into the hitch at 2 angles. 1 from the hill, other angle since he tried to swerve. Speed limit there is 50mph, traffic on the other side of the hill was slowing down fast so he hit me going I'd guess 30-35mph difference in speed. But it's a weak part of the frame, old steel, and hit right smack on a leverage point. Needless to say, I doubt the insurance is gonna try to rebuild it since the frame bent. Also I didn't mount that hitch, not my weld job.

Good call on the weld job...

Just gonna chop and reattach?
