OK, previous owner didnt give mte the keys to the gas cap...
I went to all the auto parts stores in town looking for one that the number matched (serial stamped on the key part) No luck...

So i'm just gonna drill it off...

anyone do this...?

I just drill the lock part out with a big bit?

Called a lock smith, they recommended just drillign it out, as they didnt have they key code to cut a key...

never done it. Did you try shoving a screwdriver in the hole? I would worry about metal shavings if you drilled it. The filter might catch them, they might cut through the filter... There's also the pump to worry about.

If you can find a blank to fit, you can make your own key. Time consuming, but it works.

Yep, just go to town with a drill. Start smaller, 1/8" and try to kill the guts of the lock, work your way up to larger and larger drill bits as you make room in there.

if you are worried about metal shavings, disconnect the rubber lines that lead to the tank from the filler neck before drilling, when done, just clean up any shavings and re-attach the rubber lines (probably 2). I warn you though, these lines are a huge PITA to deal with

also, if all else fails, you can remove the filler neck assembly from the truck and replace it with a junkyard one.

you may find it easier to remove the filler neck assembly completely from the truck so you are not bending at a weird angle with low light on the keyway... that is also probably the safest way to do it as there will be no gas tank near by this way.

Back in the day when I worked at a gas station, people would always loose their keys! You can either jam a flathead in there and turn or get really big pliers and turn hard.

+1 on the screwdriver. I think it's safer than drilling, not to mention faster. Is it a plastic cap? I just jammed my knife into one of those once and twisted it off faster than if I had used the key.

you're all missing the obvious, here. it's a disposable truck, like those one-time use cameras. once you run out of gas, you toss it and get a new one. it gets rid of the inconvenience of having to go fill up.

Have you tried picking it?

If its the type that the handle just spins when locked; all you have to do is put two self tapping screws 180 from each other through the top down into the lower locked section to lock them together, then unscrew as normal. I've personally done this at least 5x on both metal and plastic caps and it has always worked. Total investment 2 minutes and $.10 worth of screws.

Should be REALLY easy to pick, but time consuming. I like the screwdriver better

I never loss the Keys i always lose the damned gas cap, cause i put it on the tire and forget about it. One time i was out in the middle of no where, (no parts stores around) so i just took some duct tape and made a gas cap:haha:.

You wouldn't believe how many people round here use rags. Like that's a good idea...:doah: All it'd take is one guy to walk buy with a lighter and think it might be funny

My F-I-L bought a Suburban with one of those metal locking gas caps on it. We had to get it off before we could get home. Big channel locks did the trick. I have a master lockout kit that has a gas cap pick in it, but I've never tried it to see if it works.

Well if this thread doesn't help in this situation we sure know how to steal gas from people that have one though hahahahaha

Disclaimer: I DO NOT condone said behavior...

My olds had one on it. All I had to do to get it off was push down hard on it, get a good grip and unscrew it.

Just drill it, use wheel bearing grease on the bit and the metal shavings will stick to the bit, clean it off and redip the grease and drill some more. This is how we tap heads that had broken spark plugs and other stuff. Never had a problem yet, take you time and use plenty of grease. You also dont have to go all the way through it when you do it. Dont put the big twist on it, I have seen the neck get messed up that way.
