Low Buck Wheeler: Project Stump Jumper

I'm doing both, truggy bed, with skins :) Anyways you took 20" out of the frame I'd be interested where you cut and how. I have my measurements laid out and it and to make the 30 degree Z cut i can only take out about 16.5" and still be able to put 64's on it. And what was your final wheelbase?

im interested too.. im thinking of shortening the one im going to get.. but was planning on moving the rear spring perches forward far enough to cut out the back ...... since i dont have it in my possession.. i cant really figure how much i can move it.... and if gas tanks were in the way.. i was thinking of a fuel cell to get around that.... or PERSUADING the gas tanks to let the spring perches in...

This was a long bed truck to start with, right? I guess he chopped on the straight part in front of the wheel well opening.

so what is the delema with moving the spring perches forward instead of cutting the frame like that?
then you can cut the excess frame out the back.....

just thinking..

the frame arcs up for the rear axle. I don't want to have to make crazy long custom hangers to get a decent pinion angle.

gotcha.. that is the bed style im looking to do...

so understanding your point.. also see where you marked for cutting...

did you Z cut it (saw someone say this a page or so back???).. so guessing that allows for a stronger weld?
ta boot did you put a piece of C channel inside of that to re-enforce?

I'll be finishing my measurements and finalizing my wheelbase on saturday. I will be doing a step by step in my build thread on exactly how to do it. I spent a few days researching how to correctly stretch or shorten a frame. Some people perfer a Step cut, and some perfer the Z at a 30 degree angle. After you cut and weld you put a fishplate in to weld to the outside.

I looked this up because I've always liked your avatar picture, great build thread!

You plan on re-centering the h1's down the road so you can ditch the spacers?

Wow lots of action in this thread... Thanks for the compliments guys :thumb:

I want to convert over to dually stuff up front and do the 90's dually 14 bolt with srw hubs, that way i can don't have to recenter my mild wheeling/ street 24 bolt h1s and 37s and my 39.5 tsl also in h1s

This sounds like a Johnny Cash song. "One part at a time"
I like it, good work!

Ha Ha, yeah she represents alot of parts trucks

I think I'm gonna paint mine that color as soon as it warms up enough for the paint to stick. My truck won't be nearly as cool as this one though, that's for sure.

The truck is actually herculined and then painted black, so far it's held up well and is very durable...:waytogo:

so you didnt like the truggy bed?

im torn cuz im going to get a crew cab... looking to do a truggy bed like what you had on there.. or id cut down the current bed front and back to fit it smaller on there....
not user yet... crew aint in my possession but starting my thinking...

I liked the look of the bed alot but i built it for under a 100 bucks with poo pipe but ultimately I wanted more space for gear and the po po in MD is alot pickier when it comes to trucks looking closer to stock, and the guy i bought the doors and hood from gave me the bed for $60 so i couldn't turn it down...

ok guys here's what I did. I straight cut the frame and butted the 2 cut pieces up and burned it in. I then took a 3/8 4"x4" piece of plate and turned it so it looked like <> and burned that in on the outside of the plate. I then took a few of the cut frame section and plated the inside of the frame and then took a 2x4 piece of tubing and welded that to the top of the frame as a frame rail and a place to mount my tube bed to...

Sorry I dug through my stuff but I don't pics I can find...

I didn't know you could paint over Herculiner. what did you do for paint prep? did you just rattle can over it?

I just realized I didn't answer the wheel base question.

I started with 131.5
removed 20"
giving me 111.5
then I mounted the 64s which are 12 inches longer than the 52s so that added 6"
putting me at 117.5
The 52" swap moved the front axle 3" so i'm just a bit over 120...

Awesome that was my goal 117" I may be closer to 119 though

yup they are hard on us here too.. however.. with mudflaps and some cover you are good..

i like the style you did.. but yeah i would want more room..

im either going to cut down the bed to make it fit.. for that OEM look.. or do something like this...

over at pirate they have a sweet crewcab thread going..

the one i really like is post 147

I like that thread alot... I think i'm going to go back to the tube bed soon but more of a fat bed style, I tend to haul a fair amount of gear when I wheel so space is important...

that is the thing.. i want to have my wheelbase shortened.. however I want/need to carry a fullsize spare (thinking a roof rack)... hilift jack (60"), all fluids, oil filter, d-shafts, spare alternator/water pump/starter, belts, tools so i too need room... and my spare is a fullsize.. 40" hawg on 16x12 steelie....

if im out i want to get it home.. expecting my truck to be a solid wheeler/get there machine....

now i dont have all the spare parts yet.. but expect it eventually...

edited... oh yeah.. also ramsey patriot 15,000lb electric winch and 2 x D8 batteries!!!!!!!!!!!!!THEY ARE HUGE
