LSX454 swapped 95 BASS burb.

Little lower, little cooler, bigger sounds.
  1. It's hard to crank the engine over.

There is a separate engine cranking timing that it uses below a set RPM, usually around 400, but is adjustable in both timing and RPM crossover, so hard to crank over is easily remedied without even changing the idle.

Every time I build an NA pump gas engine for a toy, I leave the knock sensors off, all they are going to do is retard my timing, and I use premium fuel because I usually have the compression to need it, I don't want my timing retarded from where I set it. If I hear ping I'll fix it myself, I don't want the computer doing it when I don't know it, I want to know it.
The knock sensors pick up random crap all the time, if I can't hear it, I'm not worried about it. Yes there are tiny stuff that is minor pinging you can't hear the knock sensors can, but I am not worried about that.

There are a few limiting factors to timing
  1. It pings. I think we have that covered
  2. You get past the point of peak torque - i.e. further advancing makes less power
  3. It's hard to crank the engine over.
Most likely, all 3 of these things will play into your tune, but in different areas of the table. This is part of why electronic timing control is so advantageous. How do you tune for #2?


Basically, you increase timing until the power stops increasing (or it pings), then back it off just a bit. A street car needs to be more conservative than a race car because it's going to see various ethanol blends and weather. Modern cars do trigger the knock sensors all the time and do a lot of timing adjustment based on that, but that's typically happening outside of the WOT range. You really don't want to ride the knock sensors to set your WOT timing. I can't comment on how effective the Holley system is in turning knock feedback into proper timing, but the OEMs do it with a ton of factors specific to that engine. I would aim for only small blips of a couple degrees occasionally on transients.

It also makes sense to scale knock in your plots so the max is like 10-15 counts/degrees. That way you'll notice some burst knock or whatever. You're never going to detect a knock level of 100 (or you have bigger problems!) and it's never going to retard 50 degrees.
See, the reason I tried to turn them on is at WOT when the windows are up, I thought there was a pingy knocky sound. Almost like lifter rattle.
But that's the only way I hear it.
So I turned them on and only gave em a sensitivity of 1.
And I'm seeing knock as high as 15 at idle.
When sensitivity was at 10, it was basically pegged at a knock level of 80-100 at idle.

But idle sounds great.


So I looked into the knock sensors in the help index, and the 24 tooth LS base tune has them set wrong to start with.
My engine has two 1 wire sensors. Which are resonant sensors, and according to them, need to be set at around 11khz. But have to be adjusted for your engine. Mine are set at 2k.
They claim a sensitivity of 50 is best.... If I did that now I'd be pegged at 100.

So I guess I'm just not going to run them, because I'm not a freaking engineer lol.

As for adjusting timing till power stops going up, and such.....
That's why I'm thinking dyno.

All I have to test this is make a change, go out on a busy highway and risk my license, come home, check a log that really doesn't tell me much about power, and try again.
This is a VERY uneconomical system. Especially when I can make 5 runs at the same time and be .5 second in either direct different on 0-60.
Then go make changes, and do 5 more, and be in the exact same 1 second range.

Which that equates to at least 6-10 runs, which could take me 3-4 days to accomplish. Due to traffic and such.

If I can stop making power before I ever hit ping, then there's no way I'm going to get it right with this current testing system I'm using :dunno:

Tuning for 0-60 is hard anyway since it shifts at like 55. So I try to do 0-100. And 5 pulls at 0-100 is just asking for a loss of license.
 
That’s why I recommended taking it to a shop. They can do what you are doing but they’ve got, or should have, a better understanding of the system and engines and what effects certain changes make and they can do it in a controlled environment.
 
For $40 or $50 you could take it to Cordova and get a real number for ET and MPH.

You don't need exact numbers for flat spots and part throttle. You can literally try it, stop, move it, try it again, etc. You can be done pretty quick.

For WOT tuning, that's a different story, but you don't actually need data logs and stuff if you do it yourself. You can just move the timing nad see what happens. Then once that is set, move the fuel target and see what happens.

I'm going to guess you will end up in the 28 - 30 range for WOT timing and around 12.9-13.2 for WOT AFR.

You can literally tune it live, have someone hold it at 2700 on the powerbrake, change the timing while it's on it, and see what happens.

I think you feel overhwelmed because there is so much data to sift through, but just go back to basics and ignore the data, try something, see how it feels, and take it from there. You'll get faster at it.

Do you have a dragstrip nearby that does test and tune?
 
I spent $700 to have my truck tuned on the dyno.











I literally don’t have any of that tune in it and the truck runs better, they were a drag racing shop and it didn’t behave on the street well. They laughed when I said it was a “level 5” 4l60e, then they drove it and asked who built that trans cause they have never seen one like it before and was amazed.
 
Yeah, I was going to mention that. Some of these guys are only tuning WOT for max performance. That can be OK for a car that ran good initially and now has had a few mods, but for something that hasn't been fully set up yet, it takes time at all different load levels. You have to communicate with the shop to be sure expectations match.

It ran ok on the street but it just didn’t shift right. once I got the trans figured out then the engine didn’t run right.

The thing is, if its just a roller chassis dyno, and not a hub dyno, they are going to have a hard time tuning steady state, part throttle driving. You kind need to drive it for that.

Hub dynos can mimmick drag passes, not sure if they can hold the engine back longer though either.

If you do the math on how many kW of power you would need to hold the engine back, a 240V 50 A circuit is just a tiny fraction of it. All they are doing is let you accelerate a known mass and then calculating the power to do it, it cannot hold the engine at any point like a water brake engine dyno can.

If I tried holding it at 2700 it would be burning out. It spins the tires about 2300. Pretty much the same place it did before:dunno:

The flat spot tuning by seat of pants I could see.

Web says they're open, the number on their site says it's disconnected.

Cordova is 15 miles from my driveway.
I actually work at the Cordova 3M plant. So just up the road from it. At some point I am going to go there just to get an ET slip to pin up on the shop bar. But I wanted to get it dialed more before actually going there.

It was a roller dyno, and you are correct part throttle and steady state wasn’t that good.

I suggest we tune out the flat spot and any drivability issues now. Then, at the track, you can just try a couple different timing numbers, and a couple different target A/F ratio numbers at WOT.

That's about as good as you are going to get even with a shop.
 
Right now my only drivability issue is it likes to die when switching gears off idle.
Only does it occasionally.
Or if I get in gear, then tap it quick it'll die when it comes back down.

Beyond that, normal driving is pretty sweet.

The only other issue at this point is the dead spot on quick acceleration.
If I'm already above 2700 and mash it it's a friggin rocket..
Well, as rocket like as a 6000# brick can get lol.


Pic to come tomorrow.... But currently, my little brake button and the skinny pedal, are teaming up for some pretty sweet burnouts finally :waytogo::woot::burnout:

Yeah, I'm used to just having a 1-number "cranking RPM" to set and below that it's not on the table, just a fixed number you put in. You can also extend your table down to account for cranking, especially with these giant new tables.

@shady just got an offer for free tuning! Honestly, there's enough experience here to get it done. A shop will work on it <1 day and will make way more progress in that day than this thread will in a week or 2, but on the other hand, we're here all the time.

Sounds like you are making good progress!

You can change the IAC values for how far it opens when the engine is running and how long it takes to taper back down to idle.

Remember, in any screen you are in, if you click on the help it will explain what it does. The best way to learn is do it.

I would definitely play with timing first, it's more likely to make a significant difference. You can literally change it live and try it again to find what it likes pretty fast. You can see what cells its on when you are live, and just change that area quick.

It's different with a transbrake, you can literally floor it and use the converter as an engine dyno for short bursts (2 - 3 seconds). The higher you get it to stall, the more power you are making. That doesn't work with foot braking it, and you don't get your true stall either foot braking it. Hopefully you can tune the flat spot out. I think changing the accel fuel might help to when you tromp on it, and then can be tested several times in a row and change it live without even going fast.

If all else fails a sure way to get it into the powerband is giggle juice....:pimp:
 
I contemplated that the other night lol.
I was thinking, "well I'll just spray it, and have it come on when I'm at 2400rpm and WOT.... That'll shoot me right past the dead spot, and get the tires going all at the same time!" Lol
Even thought about a purge tube running all the way back under the bumper with a kazoo or rubber flaps on it so it Farts then goes like hell :haha:

My mind wanders some when I get bored lol.


Way back in my cruising strip days, I wanted hydraulics in the worst way.
I wanted to set it up to 3 wheel the opposite way.
So I could pull up next to another car on the strip, lift a rear wheel, and piss yellow food colored water out of a window washer bottle in the back at their tire :D
