lunchbox type lockers???

don't know if it was a mid year split, but almost every place ive looked claim my 88 is 30 spline:dunno: I may wanna figure that out before I order:rolleyes:

I'll end up with an extra $2600 over my normal pay for this month so the locker is mine for sure:D half of the rest of it has to pay the CC bill for trying to make it run:doah:

Rick my D60 front is the lockright...rear is a Detroit.

I have a Lock-Rite in my 10b front and have had no issues with it. I don't notice any issues with turning it or anything. If they are set right, they unlock and are not noticeable. I fully plan on getting a lunch-box for my 12b and ditching the mini-spool this winter.

A friend has been running a Aussie Locker in his D44 for almost 8 years now and other than one set of broken pins (easily replaced) when he busted a Warn Premium hub into shrapnel has had no issues with it. It's in a manual transmission truck that he's anything but easy on. I know of at least two busted axle shaft u-joints it's survived and countless full throttle assaults at different obstacles, hill climbs, and even pulling a trailer with a small tractor on it one winter because his F250's front axle was blown out and he had to use his trail rig. :waytogo:

I had a lock-rite in my 10 bolt front and never had any problems with it on the street. I also never had any problems with steering, and if you unlock your hubs and run it in 2 wheel drive, it should behave just like your open front diff does now.
I have a lock-rite in my front Dana 60 and haven't had any issues with it. I ran it with drive flanges up until a few weeks ago, and without hydro assist for a period of time, and never noticed it in the front until I put the t-case in 4 wheel drive.

I'm not as worried about the locker it's self coming apart as I was about breaking stuff in my axle. shaft's, u joints, carrier, etc. my guess is that these units are far stronger than the OE pieces around them. . I think i'll be fine though... if not I guess its time for upgrades :D

I broke a few axle shafts at the u-joint after installing the lock-rite in my 10 bolt, but I also have a heavy right foot.

This is going in the burb right? Just a caution a locker will allow you to get into trouble insanely fast. Body damage usually follows :D

So lemme just say now link it and tube it out:haha::haha:

If you do put one in the front. Mod your shafts for full circle snap rings. I always thought it wasn't necessary, especially for a rig running in the dunes. Messed up a nice 30 spline chromo shaft with that kind of thinking when the caps shot out :doah:

It's also an almost free mod. All you need is some grinding and 8 1-3/16" snap rings iirc.

You will not be disappointed in the Powertrax No Slip. Had it in a rear 10b and worked great. I didn't have any tire chirping and it did an excellent job in snow.
That axle now belongs to KansasTwister.
Can't speak about any other lunchbox lockers, but I have a Detroit in the rear 14b and no complaints.

I have fixed to many powertrax no slips to recommend them. More than likely in a spartan or lock right you will break pins at some point it may take years but it is their weak point. That's costs 20 bucks usually. What breaks in the no slip is the active spacer paddle. 90 bucks to fix

I noticed that most places selling them sold pins individually.... figured they were a wear point. something I can check every year and see if its getting bad maybe. I really wheel very little. un plowed dirt roads in the winter sometimes and mostly only during dry times in the summer with and occasional ditch in the country. I had a few times last year when even a limited slip would have been a enough to get me through to where I wanted to go. odd angles and such were leaving me with no weight on 2 tires.... I want at least 3 with power. 4 eventually

Wow.....I didn't know this. Before I bought mine I did some searches and looked at reviews. From everything I read at the time it seemed like a good choice so I got one, fairly easy to install and worked great. I didn't have it for a long time and I really didn't put it through any tests.

Thanks for the input. :waytogo:

It's another one of those if you break a shaft type of things. Not always but I have replaced that part or diagnosed it several times.

I wish not cause they seem super smooth. I would consider one in a muscle car stresses are different but no thanks in a 4x4

Course I will never buy a Detroit ever again except for a 14 bolt so take it for what you will

i'm also looking at doing the same thing in my town car... so the no slip would be smoother there you think?

finally got clarity on spline count I think..... the bazers and suburbans from 89-91 got the 30 as stated by someone in this thread a bit ago... but the pickups switched in 88. so looks like ill be getting a 28 spline one. I don't have the time or place to pull it apart and look first:doah: so I hope that's right.

just for giggles I'm going to check the local truck only scrapyard and see what they get for a 6 bolt 14sf with a govbomb... $600 or less and I can do that instead and save me SOME headache and worry.... (if its a working unit anyway:rolleyes:)

they'll probably want an arm, leg, and firstborn for one. but its worth a phone call

after a minor brain fart ignited causing a light over head I realized that doing this to my Lincoln first would be a way better idea..... at least my burb HAS 4x4 and will drive around fine without if need be... just not play as well..... but the lincolns 4200#, 20' long, one legger a$$ will be near useless when the snow gets more intense:rolleyes: so I think its getting the locker right now... its leaking back there anyway so I gotta pull the cover one way or the other.

How come no body ever mentions just running an eaton posi? I think the Lincoln would benefit and it doesn't have the quirks lockers have. I've got 110k miles on my s10's eaton and it's still going super strong.
