Take a manifold vacuum reading at idle. I seem to recall that a stock Holley power valve opens when vacuum drops to 8 inches. You could easily be flirting with that range with the cam that you're running. ;) A power valve that opens early will burn pig rich until you really get on the loud pedal.

The Holley tech folks should be able to suggest the correct power valve to run if you provide them with the cam specs. :)

not to steal manny's glory here, but what power valve would be needed for a 750 holley. summit has all different H.G. numbers. from 2.5 up to like 10.5 it looks like...i think i have a burnt power valve since my truck is running really really rich.

hay manny my first post to your build. very nice. i had the same issue with my holley. 850 is too much carb a 600 will supply any sbc up to about 5000rpm a 670 or 750 is idela for you. hollys are not that great on the street. the power valves suck. if it has backfired thru the carb they are probably blown out. save alot of trouble and get and edelbrock. i went thru 2 holleys before i would listen to anyone. much more tuneable easy to work on etc. sbc's like about 34- 38 mech +innital. disconnect vac lines and plug. rev eng to about 3-3500 mechanical should be all in by then set to 36. set it and leave it alone. re connect vac adv can and see how it idles. how much vac do you pull at idle? how much adv does your can add? what springs in the dizzy?

Hey manny, keep your head up through this little issue.

You've shown no signs of getting bummed out, but when i run into issues like this with something i'm so excited about, i get bummed out really fast.

Great motor, will be sweet when its all tuned! Keep up the good work!

stumble- have you checked the acc pump arm gap...should be .015 gap between the arm and the pump, when wide open.
What size are the squirters (I'm assuming its a double pumper)
Increase a few sizes to test off line response.
Back that timing off to about 12-14 initial, and 36 total.
Open up the idle mixture screws to about 1-1/2 turns open.
Good luck

Did Janke say to cap off the vacuum to the carb or to the dizzy? You don't want to cap the vacuum to the secondaries. I have a Carter AFB (Same as Edelbrock, they bought the rights to sell Carter's design under their name) that I don't need any more, but I think it would be too small for your engine. Its a 625 cfm model with the off-road needle and seat. If you do end up buying an edelbrock, make sure you get the off-road needle and seat or you'll be sorry when you hit the pits. Good luck with the tuning.
I have had problems with dieseling before, and its no fun. Definately check out the timing and your idle settings. You might try to hook the vacuum advance to ported vacuum (no vacuum at idle, but full vacuum at part throttle) to help with the dieseling.

Unhook the vac advance then rotate the dissy clockwise to retard the timing. Only should need a very slight adjustment. This should be done with engine running so you can hear any changes.

Sorry my bad... I meant to say clockwise and not counter-clockwise

wow, how am i the first to reply, im supposed to be doing hw.....

anyways, sounds awesome man. Keep up the good work!

I did notice one thing tonight. I filled up with Chevron 93 instead of the AAFES (Post gas) 93. The engine seemed to like it a lot more.

Saturday morning will be the test.

Manny
Is the post gas avgas? The government does some strange things because they can. Or the quality of the post gas may not be as good as the chevron.

I have to sing the same song here as others on the carb size. I think its to big for this app. I think you'll be happier with a 750 for most driving. I also think it will suck butt when you go mudding, that style of holley isn't the happiest when doing that. There's a reason the 770 truck avenger from holley sells so well.

If you change to an edelbrock call their tech line first for a part number recomendation. They will want your cam specs when you talk to them. If I had to guess they will probably say that you should go with a thunder series carb with you cam. I used a performer 750 with a cam very similar to yours in a street car and it idles rich but works well everywhere else. It took some tuning and a tuning kit to get it dialed in but its ok.

If you want to dump the 850 or the 750 pm me.....

Hey manny, I had the same problem with AAFES gas in my mustang. I actually went about 50 miles more per tank and ran much better when I got gas at a chevron or bp vs aafes. My wifes truck don't like it too much either, makes it detonate pretty bad and looses gas mileage as well. Stick with Chevron brother.

Then, taking the outer shaft, with a brass brush, I cleaned out the cap hole of as much paint as possible. I learned that when hammering in the caps, the clip ridge filled with paint shavings and it's a PITA to get them clean again. LEARN FROM ME....IF YOU DECIDE TO PAINT YOUR AXLE SHAFT YOKES, PUT THE U-JOINTS IN FIRST, THEN PAINT. Ask me how I know!!

Hey Manny, now that your done with those, I like to take a brake hone and clean them up shiney before installing new U-joints....makes things a breeze.
Keep the Quality up...
