New Digital Pics of 383 on Dyno- 12/09/2006
Went down to Mr. Janke's today for the 2nd Dyno testing. Mr. Janke called me earlier in the week and wanted to open up the motor and adjust the internal timing of the cam to try and bring the big torque numbers down in the RPM range. In earlier posts, I showed the results of the first Dyno, which the torque was up in the 5000+ RPM range. Mr. Janke wanted to bring it down to start around 4000 RPM. He's the expert, so I agreed to let him try it.
When I got there, my 383 was mounted on the Dyno all ready to go. Here are some real good digital photo's of my baby.
Now mind you, a lot of the smaller stuff you see belongs to the Dyno set-up. My wires are not installed and they will be black with grey boots. I am also getting polished wire grips. Yeah, gotta dress it up for the MALLCRAWLING-right MUDDYBUDDY?

My waterpump, which is a polished Edelbrock is not installed either. The carburetor connects will be straight polished piping as well. All in all, she will be quite the looker!
Okay, so now that the pretty stuff is outta the way, lets get to the Dyno video's and reports. Here are a couple of Dyno runs from inside the control booth.
I just love the roar of this motor. She's gonna sound awesome tearin' up the MUD pits and bogs!
We did a total of 9 runs today. Two runs were done using two different carburetor spacers: 1 open and 1-4 hole stacked. The thought was to create more of a draw of fuel and air. The combination didn't make any real difference +/- . Here are the results:
Run:
1. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet
2. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet
3. 38* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - Installed my new HEI
4. 36* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet
5. 36* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - (Pass #2)
6. 36* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - Open Spacer w/ 4 Hole Spacer stacked
7. 36* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - Open w/ 4 Hole (Pass #2)
8. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - (Back to open spacer only)
9. 40* MSD 850 CFM 80 Jet - (Pass #2)
HP/Ft Lbs by Run:
1. 511.5/528.1
2. 522.6/536.2
3. 526.5/535.1
4. 521.9/537.2
5. 519.6/535.9
6. 519.4/529.1 (Open w/ 4 Hole Spacer)
7. 523.8/537.7 (Open w/ 4 Hole Spacer - Pass #2)
8. 523.3/539.6
9. 532.0/537.9
+/- Margins: HP: +/- 20.50 Ft/Lbs: +/- 11.50
Notice how runs 6 and 7 showed no real increase in torque and the HP took a hit. This 383 definitely likes the open spacer alone.
Here are all 9 Dyno sheets printed out:
Looking over the comparisons in data between Dyno runs 1 and 2, the changes Mr. Janke made in the cam timing really made a difference. He brought the torque and horsepower lower in the RPM band which is exactly what he wanted. Right now he runs C16 (???) fuel so the adjustments will allow premium gasoline and not affect the overall figures.
Thankfully I will have my truck back around Christmas! What a present. Believe me when I say, I miss my truck. I'm not the same without her. Yet, she seems to have a new boyfriend... Dang! I thought my truck was faithful???
Sold out for a low rider....
Thanks again for all the compliments and the suggestions! So much more to come!
