Hey Manny, how did the timing adjustments work out? I'm surprised that didn't do more to help things. I have a coworker who just had a GM crate 350 installed in his camaro and his mechanic recommended advancing the timing slightly for a few hundred miles while the motor breaks in. Maybe something similar is needed here. It hard to believe both carbs are having problems at the same time.

Ah, good to know. My coworker also has the same issue with stalling at idle. The mechanic says it'll to go away after it breaks in and does the final tune-up. It sounds like your in good shape in any case.

Hey Brian,

I adjusted the timing and that's the ticket. We dropped down to 38*. That's this 383's sweet spot. The issues I'm having are simple. An electric choke that is sticking open, and an idle that will hold its setting. 750-800 is the mark. Less than that and she'll stall out. More than that and she'll diesel. Why the Holley won't hold the mark I don't know.

In retrospect, I just got off the phone with Ken at Barry Grant. He recommends a Mighty Demon 650, with mechanical secondaries for the engine. He spent a good amount of time with me on the phone explaining everything. I'm in the market to shop for one. So far $549.99 is the best price I've found. Anything will be better than the Holley's at this point.

JMHO.

Thanks for your caring!

Manny

Hey manny, I am by no means telling you what you should or shouldn't do, but after buying two carbs, I think the problem is in the tunning. Before spending almost 600.00 on a new one I would go have that one done by a local hotrod shop that specializes in stuff like that. If you think about it, until the late 90's a good majority of race cars, truck, mud boggers, etc. used Holley's with not problems. I do have a tip for you though.

When I built my BBC and put my 850 on it would be close to dying at low idle with the cam I was running. My boss built racing engines and showed me a trick to fix that. He drilled an 1/8" hole in both primary butterflies. The holes were drilled in front of the retaining rail, centered on the butterfly. Allows a little more air in and made a world of difference in my idle quality. now when I adjust my idle mixtures it works as it should and I don't load up at idle any longer either.

Since that time I have had to do that on three other engine I built and all work great now. Wish I was home, I would take a pic. However I have seen that mod in a "how to rebuild/modify a Holley carb" book. I think it was at my advance or Oreilly's store.

Bottom line I would use my resources before spending money that you may not need to spend. BTW if you want to talk about it PM me and I'll give you a call.

Manny, I gotta say my hat is off to you. You've shown discipline normal people could only dream of in your saving and spending, wisdom is your part's choices, and you are also like the nicest guy ever. Congratulations on your build!

As for your carb issue's, I gotta agree with everyone else, try to work with it before you throw in the towel. And to be fair Barry Grant would sell you a BG carb, which is Holley based BTW. But your choke can be somewhat of a hassle. Make sure it's hooked up to a switched 12v source that stays 12v at all times first of all, secondly from what you described, it sounds like your fast idle is set too low. Turn it up a quater of a turn, you want a 1300-1500 idle when the choke is closed. Summit sells a great book on tuning Holley's, and it's invaluable. I would be happy to help you out as much as I can also.

Another thing, is if you are set on getting a new carb, don't overlook the Qjet. I know you have a built motor, but Ford used them from the factor on Boss 429's (yes I know it's a Chevy carb, but Ford used them, look it up), so they can work with your motor, and the combination of a small primary for cruising and good throttle response, with the large secondaries for extra WOT power is hard to beat. Not to mention they are the next best thing to EFI.

Manny, I can get you the offical Holley tune guide instructions. I need to know exactly what carb it is though. I know its a 750cfm with electric choke and duel inlets, but is it a true Double Pumper or is it a 4160 model carb? Vacuum secondaries or mechanicle? Secondary metering block or no?

I believe it's a single pumper. Vacuum secondaries. Not sure on the block. I'll hafta go look at the number. It won't be till Friday, because I'm on quarters and if I lift the hood to look, I'll get in trouble.

Thanks!

Manny

Thats fine you don't need to get in trouble.

Based on the description, sounds like its a 750cfm 4160 Holley
If it looks like this one in the picture, then click the link below for Holley's offical tuning instructions. They aren't too in depth, but are an excelent starting place:

I have some more indepth tuning literature that I've scanned onto my computer, it would be a lot easier for me to email you them because the pictures are too big to post here and take for ever to upload on Photobucket. So if you would like to, PM me your email address and I can send you what I have that I used to dial in my carb.

Manny it really sucks that you are having trouble with this. Don't give up on Holley. I have their truck avenger. I bolted it on and adjusted the choke and idle and haven't fooled with it in 3+ years.

My idles at about 450. I know thats low but I love the way it sounds and shakes the truck.

like I said earlier the choke is the only hangup, but I have only had the carb stumble once and I stood the truck on it's nose. Any further vertical and The truck would have ended up on its roof. there was a little hesitation but I drove out of it.

Here is the Holley book, I honestly learned everything I know from it, and screwing around with mine. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SAD%2DSA08&N=700+4294924480+115&autoview=sku

Thats what it takes to get em great.....I think if you can invest the time into it Manny, it will be worth it, and save $100's over the BG. Not that he don't make a good carb, but if you can find a carb expert for Holleys' it will be worth the effort.

manny, i havent read this all the way through, so im not sure if someone suggested this or not, this is something that i have learned from hardcore racecar guys when you wanna drive a modified motor on the street with a holley...
I had a 377CI( destroked 400, a revving sob ill tell ya), in my 69 nova, i was having the SAME problems as you but my cam was a little bigger and i had a single plain intake, i was told to drill a hole in the throttle blades o nthe carb, not big just 1/32 or so, this leans out the idle circuit and makes it hold a idle better without turning the screw in a bunch... you see, with that cam it really should wanna idle around 900-1100, buy 1100 your out of the idle circuits in the carb and shes running fat...
i did this trick on my 750Double pumper and it was the best thing that i did.. no more dieseling, funky idle or loading up... i cant say this will cure your problem in whole because its a new motor and you will half to tweak on it for awhile to get it right, but this WILL help you if you decide to do it...
if anyone doesnt agree with me, let it be known but this worked for me and my plugs looked awesome after 1,000 miles and hitting the 7,500 RPM chip a few times.... just stay with the holley, once you have it tuned, you will be happy.. (although i would have went with a double pumper mechanical secondaries on it for how easy they are to tune, but the vacuum secondaries work fine too) hope this helps man.. otherwise, great sounding truck

there is also a screw on the bottom of the carb, that you have to turn the carb upsidedown to get to, that will tip open the rear blades to improve idle, without getting into the transition circuit of the primaries. It has worked for both of the Holleys, that I've had trouble getting to idle. Also make sure that there are NO vac leaks.

Good Morning Chevy,

I want to thank you for the Holley information. I printed it out this morning and I'm going over it today. I will do everything Holley states to improve my carburetion. I hope this will do the trick. It's folks like you who reach out to help that makes my heart glow and bring total success to this project. Thank you again for your kindness!

my god, i'm losing it, i read this singing the song. Spongebob has taken over my TV at home, My kids live for it, its on 20 times a day, i haven't laughed at a post in a while......to me that was very funny.

Manny, i still think what i said about 10 pages back is a good thing to think about. I threw away about 50 hours of my life messing with holleys on my blazer. I bought a 1406 and i litterly haven't touched a carb in 6 months. No it prolly wont make the HP's a holley will, but who cares if you cant get it to run right anyway.

:D Why did I sing along to that?!
