Got in the K5 to drive my dog to the vet this afternoon. Something felt off with the throttle response and my gas gauge was at a quarter tank. That struck me as odd because I filled up last night. Figured my gas gauge was on the way out... but pulled over anyway into a gas station. Got the gas pump going and it is taking one gallon, two gallons, three gallons... I look underneath the truck.

I must have really pissed somebody off, cause it looks to me like there is a hole drilled right into the tank. I have no clue what I did. I don't remember getting into it with anybody recently or anything like that.

I managed to get my K30 out of the garage and the K5 is safely in its place. I've got a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket catching fuel as it spills out of the tank. It was probably pretty unsafe to drive with that hole in the tank, but I panicked a little bit.

How tough is it to replace the fuel tanks on these things? I guess that's up next for me.

definitely looks like a hole was drilled

A transmission jack simplifies the process of dropping the tank. I would recommend a replacement tank from spectra.

I presume this isn't something that I would try and patch, right?

I have a Jeepster Commando that got a hole in the bottom. Bit of rust and some rocks kicked up at speed on a dirt road. Not a daily driver. I patched it when I was broke intending to fix it later. That was 10 years ago, its still fine. Also patched a Baja bug I sold, worked ok. They sell patch material at the parts store. Its kind of like JB weld. Not ideal, don't really recommend it, but if you need to get to work tomorrow its an option for sure.

You can patch it. Might not be permanent, and said thief can knock the patch off and drain it again

I agree with the theft idea. If someone was mad at you, they probably would have been more likely to put something bad in the tank.

not bad . spectra premium is the brand i try and buy for tanks and senders . agreed with theft of fuel . did you atleast call the cop and report it ? so they can keep tabs on the area .

Had a hole punched in my k5 tank once. Noticed it at the fuel station just like you.
Let all the fuel run out that I just put in. Took the brake cleaner out of the back and sprayed the tank off off and wiped it down.
Went and took out the big bolt that holds the front inner fender to the cab. Schmeared a bunch of rtv on the flange and ran er home in the tank. Several year fix.

Are you still parking on the side street or in front of or semi in front of your house?
I remember your neighbors bitching about you parking away from your house.
You would have smelled gas and there would be a lot of snow melt and asphalt discoloration
if someone just drilled and ran.

Nah, I didn't file a report. I guess I still could... just don't have any suspects or evidence or anything like that... and I run just basic liability insurance, so no chance of really getting an insurance claim.

The K5 was parked in front of my house but on the far side of the street. I stopped parking away from my house and strictly park on my block now. Yeah... there was a big pile of red/brown snow and it smelled awful when I got back to the spot. The hole in the gas tank is in a really weird spot and I think a decent little bit of fuel was still inside the tank. I was able to get a mile or so down the road and my gas gauge was showing 1/4 tank. That being said, the needle was bouncing all over the place.

I don't mean to turn this into a housing market b****ing thread, but I really gotta buy a house with a driveway so that I can keep my stuff off the street. It's "extra bad" where I live because thieves heading south on I-25 can get off the highway, make a quick loop around my block, and then get right back onto I-25 south within minutes:

In the summer of 2021, my Mitsubishi was broken into and somebody attempted to steal it. On Thanksgiving night, my girlfriend's catalytic converter was stolen off of her XJ. Now this. When I chat with my neighbors, they say they've had their s*** messed with too.

I guess I really just need to get my girlfriend's XJ done so that I can put both squarebodies safely into the garage. The Mitsubishi is too low to crawl under so the only theft threat with that car is a break-in. I run steering wheel locks ("clubs") in all my vehicles now... so chances are they will keep walking.

I look for homes every so often on the internet. Found a few gems and one that I really loved. Just can't afford them. Denver's housing market is wild.

You can patch it. If you know how to solder, take a penny or a nickel and get some Tin-All and patch it. Make sure that you purge the fumes from the tank first. You can use a hose from the exhaust of another vehicle run into the tank and let it run for a good while and it will get the gas fumes out.

Tanks are cheap though.

If someone drilled that to steal gas they are obviously dumb as F*** on a few levels. One it's about the dumbest place to try and get gas from the tank, and two, I'd think the thought of fire in your face would come up somewhere.

My dually sits behind my house off the alley. I've noticed lately that my mpg which had been bad, seemed much worse.
Like from 9-11 to 5-7.
Tune up, carb rebuild, still low.

Added a locking gas cap, back to 9.5
Glad they didn't try that method.

If you have the space and $$ go to Harbor freight and get the hydraulic table. Works awesome for tanks, trans, and Tcases on lifted trucks. Little more pricey now adays, but worth it.

Isn't drilling a fuel tank with fuel in it.... a little ballsy?
meh- maybe? drill bit probably not going to be fast or hot enough to spark drilling through that...

now some of my cordless drills have automatic brakes on them, and may spark if you let it go from high speed to a stop suddenly... that could be bad if you drilled straight up and let the drill get covered with gas??? IF anybody drills my tank, I hope they do it THAT way.

just an easy score for a low life scumbag. wait until gas goes up a few more dollars per gallon, and the effects shut down the economy...

I need to carry a bar of soap in the ruck for when this happens to me. Anybody have favorite brand for emergency gas leak stoppage??
