Do you guys think it would harm anything to do a lap around the gas tank with duct tape or something of the sort? Just want to reinforce this patch with something because it seemed so easy to pop off the old patch.

re: getting rid of the burr:

Take a drill bit a couple-3 sizes larger than the hole, chuck it up in a drill.

Use medium speed, touch the drill to the hole. Dont let it grab or it will make things worse. The edge of the larger bit will deburr the hole.

Then I would pop a closed end rivnut in it with a bolt. Rtv/seal the shit out of it.

I was actually able to pry the burr off with a scraper and pliers... was happy about that. Never heard of a rivnut before... interesting!!

If the patch pops off it wasn't prepared enough. Hard to get that tank clean enough for good adhesion. Laquer thinner or something and sandpaper if you have to do it again.

Once it finally stopped weeping gas out of the drill hole, I sprayed some brake cleaner on a rag and wiped it down. Then I hit it with 60 grit sandpaper. I'm optimistic it holds this time!

just saw the news this morning- someone caught on a ring camera walking around with a home depot bucket and cordless drill... found an SUV, drilled the tank, stole about 3 gallons, and let the other 30 gallons drain down the parking lot as they walked away.
