May Have Pissed Somebody Off

Ground wire for my ‘91 is on the driver side frame rails out mid way down the tank. But who knows what some previous owner did.

The butchery I’ve seen of people installing trailer wiring I wouldn’t be surprised to see somebody hack the fuel pump ground.
I hate buying an old truck and seeing a break controller. You can about guarantee there's some wiring butchery. Which is so sad when you can buy a nifty adapter that plugs into the factory harness.

Agreed. Many times you see those it was installed by some kid a uhaul store or similar and get hacked into the system. scotch locks and wire nuts are the favorites among these clowns.

I gotta be... the dumbest son of a b**** on these forums. Took one look at the electricals coming off the top of the fuel tank. Saw it was unplugged immediately.

Must have forgotten I had disconnected it when trying to get at the skid plate bolts toward the front of the truck.

Sorry to waste your guys' time and thank you all for responding. It fired right up.

Any time you troubleshoot something, even when its simple, its valuable experience. Next time something happens it might be on the side of the road. You now have a bunch of info in your head that might get you going again. I have definitely unplugged something and forgot; it happens.

Dude don’t beat yourself up. We’ve all done stuff like that.

I’ve replaced parts that didn’t fix the problem only to find the actual problem later.

Just be happy you figured it out. If anything you learned retracing your steps is a good starting point.

I did an engine swap in my first k5. Drove all the home from my buddy's place in 1st gear. Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't upshift. Finally figured out we never hooked up the vacuum modulator. 25 years later it's still one of the first things I make sure to reconnect. They're all valuable lessons.

Sorry to hear someone messed with your truck. I hate thieves and vandals, had to get my Silverado's exhaust repaired last month when someone attempted to steal the cats and had to replace the door handles and locks after someone broke in to swipe the stereo and some miscellaneous stuff. Don't feel bad about missing the unplugged wire, today i "installed" my Porter Cable cordless worklight into my Silverado's door. Had the door almost all back together only to realize I left it in the door.

Seems like last time gas theft was an issue was the 70’s when Carter was pres. gonna be a rough few years.

Back then there were all steel fuel tanks, all metal locking gas caps and most importantly no cordless tools. Made it a bit harder to quickly steal the gas and there were less shitbags lurking about as well.

And these plastic tanks a lot are 2 layer so you cant just plug the hole .

Demant for used tanks will sky rocket for sure .

The shitty thing is you figure most likely the thief can probably only capture 5 gallons, maybe 10 max. That means a lot of the gas is going to hit the ground if the tank is very full.

Kinda makes me wonder if that's why @shima's tank was drilled up higher so that the gas coming out was more manageable. But that seems like a lot of forethought for a gas thief.

I've got both squares in the garage now. I am thankful that they're off the street. My Mitsubishi is low to the ground and has a steering wheel lock on it, so I feel best about that one being on the street. I don't keep anything in it so I'd be surprised if someone broke into it... and they're sure as hell not crawling beneath it.

When I walk into the garage these days, I'm getting blasted with gas fumes. I took the 'ol Home Depot bucket out of the garage because it still had a little tiny bit of gas in it... but that was days ago. The gas fumes are still strong. I'm not sure if it is from the skid plate (because it was soaked with gallons and gallons of gas) or if my putty seal is allowing fumes to escape. The fumes are definitely coming from the Blazer though, somewhere. Also, when the gas pump kicks off, my gauge shows just a little over 3/4 full. It used to work fine, so I have no reason to think it isn't accurate.

@HankScorpio can you smell gas when you get into your Jeep after driving it somewhere?

The behavior at the gas pump makes me think that the tank is super pressurized with fumes or something like that... but I don't know what the hell I'm talking about or if that's even possible.
