I think it'll be faster to just make these work. The box sides I got were two different brands, and the driver's is just stupid. The outer skin looks just fine, and ultimately that is the really important part.

I just removed that box side and laid it flat on some foam and mapped out the holes. They're all over the map...a couple are sorta close, and a few are off by nearly the entire hole. Also just found the cutout for the filler neck is wildly too big, so I get to make a patch for that.

I love these easy one hour jobs!! :surepal:

I've been to Kenny's old place in Roy IIRC? I can't even recall what I bought anymore.
 
I mapped all the bolt holes as accurately as I could. The proof will be when I chuck this back on the truck I guess. Then I made myself a drill guide block to relocate the holes without having to use a file or a rotary burr. At least that bit of kit worked well.

As well as the bolt holes being off in all directions, the cutout for the driver's filler neck was about double the size it was supposed to be. I'm not running dual tanks so I decided to just patch it fully.

Going to throw this thing back on the truck after dinner. Fingers crossed...
 
Still fighting this bedside. I don't care what color a fella is, or what language he speaks. I think every company has that guy that just doesn't give a shit, might have showed up half cut...who knows. That guy built this bedside. The irony is the passenger side was 90-95% on the money.

Still not on the truck. tomorrow I win, then on to better things!! :waytogo:

I don't feel that is the problem. obviously the bedside is constructed from a big inner piece, the outer skin and a handful of other contributing parts. It's also probably done on some sort of fixture, but if you don't ensure each part is exactly tight to where it should be things can be off a fair bit. The biggest failure is really in QC/QA...but if you're China that is probably the one place they know they can save a bunch of money. How many returns do you think they deal with? Zero is my guess. We just make the shit work while bitching about it on the internet...
 
Everything buttoned up, bedside prepped and spot primed then two coats of my favorite rattle can. "Zero Fox red"

Dries to a satin finish. I'm not a big paint guy. I like stuff that can be abused a little, and easily touched up as needed.
 
Looks fine Rene”. On the Iron Maiden, I just washed the existing (solid paint/primer) w dawn dishsoap and a fine 3M pad, rinsed it and shot it.
Did you prep the floor for paint too?
I still got overspray on my floor from 20 yrs ago.
 
My garage floor is a hot mess. It'll get a broom job and that's about it. I did cover the '57 though....lol

I had one spot near the cab up top where the black EDP had some sort of weird reaction? Came like that, was kinda crinkled. So I sanded that to bare and feathered into where it was good, short two quick coats of primer over that area, then wiped the whole thing down with the nearest shop rag I could find. lol

If you scroll up to the pic with the Coors can, look to the left of the can and you can see the crinkled part.
 
It's been a little while since I updated this. I have been making progress though, and we have been camping and stuff too.

I got the driver's floor taken care of

I then started a small project of the heater box and passenger firewall. The heater box it turned out had a bunch of jute underlay some mouse had moved into it. That made me happy I decided to take this apart to clean, inspect, paint and re-assemble.
The driver's half will be a bit more finicky, but it'll get done soonish.

At this point I had to decide the next steps, and as mush as I wanted the door re-installed to seal up the cab...I had to admit there were a few other jobs that would be a ton easier without the door or anything else installed. The steering column needs swapped, and this truck really needs a good set of gauges. I chose a package from Glowshift. Somewhat direct fit...allegedly. Comes with a brand new bezel. So I ordered it. Once it arrived I realized they only make the 81-91 bezel, which looks dumb with the early dash pad. So, seeing as they don't make the early version I set about making the gauges fit the OE bezel.

I have a small repair to make on the left side of the bezel to fill in a hole the previous owner chewed into it for a switch. Other than that the bezel was minty.


Next up was to wire the whole thing. I wanted to be able to unplug this whole deal easily...so I got some deutche (sp?) plugs in a kit and after some tuition got the hang of how they get pinned and are assembled. I think it turned out OK. I'm doing the other half on the truck side right now...1000003997.jpg
