hmmm, thought I just came up with the idea of a full expanded steel grill.. :doah: hadn't seen yours... i've got some downstairs..

Im000455-1.jpg

it's like 9 - 1 1/2" or something, 9 gauge, with diamond openings 1 1/2" across the opening..

bigger holes than yours... I'm gonna rap it in 5/16's roundrod... gonna do it in black, offset the copper..

I dig your Bowtie and aux lights in there..

Don't remember the brand name, but it was the best quality spray enamel that Lowes had. The color was taupe..........as close to WWII desert tan I could find.

I washed and scrubbed it with the green scrub pads. Hard to scrape off, though the rocks do a pretty good job!

Both of those are close to what I am looking for. Could you tell me what kind of paint wast used. I was thinking rustoleum had a similar color is that what you used?
This is the paint I used on mine, I got it at a local army/navy store If you find a place to get it online let me know, cause the local store raised their prices and these cans cost me $8 bucks a piece.

Thanks, I think I will probably go with something like rustoleum. Or I guess I could slip the burb in the next time we have a military refurb machine at work that needs paint and get the real stuff sprayed on.
dude! YOU ARE THE MAN!! I'm gonna order a case of the spray paint (12pk) for $30 thats 2.50 a can!

FYI I have used the rustoleum spray paint. I wasnt happy with it. I painted my rear shackles with it, and they sctratched easily. next time I have them off I am going to paint them with this BLP stuff

never mind I found it.
Yea I just ordered a case. with shipping its still like $3.33 a can a lot better than the local place. Thank you for sending me that link, I really appreciate it

These are the only ones i've got. I still need to sand/prime the doors and the cab needs some bodywork before I can paint it green

I'm painting the bottom half Krylon Khaki for easy touchup. I like the yellow, so it will stay on the top half. Also the topper will get painted yellow.

I'm happy with the appearance of mine. :dunno: For one thing it's flat, so it looks different from normal paint finishes. Mine covered well because it was going over yellow. It sure looks a hell of a lot better than the mismatched paint patching I had before. I've seen some rattle can paint jobs that surprised me in the past.

how many rattle cans do you all think would take to do the whole outside of my longbec truck and in the bed, or do you guys think i should do the inside of the bed a different color?

It took a little less than 4 cans to do what I did.

Georgia Gabe & Ryoken, more info on your grills please:thumb:

I've been looking to do something similar:D

How'd you attach it? Supports?

Did it increase your "usable space?" I'm looking to add an intercooler and will need all the real estate I can get :doah: ;)

Good find on the paint!

Now that I've officially hi-jacked this thread... :o

I haven't done mine yet, waiting to pick up a clean pair of fenders...

I think the roundrod edge idea should work good.. It's what popped in my head when I first thought of this.. I'm gonna just weld in small tabs to the inside edge of the roundrod for perimeter mounting... I figure 2 on each fender, then maybe 2 on top, and 2 on bottom..

at this point, thats all i'm planning on for mounting till it's in.. The stuff I bought is pretty heavy and stiff... I would bet, the center downbrace of the factory grill could be ditched at that point.. And that would free some space to add to the couple inches ya pickup from losing the plastic grill...

I made mine out of three small sheets I had laying around. I welded it to the two metal straps that you can see in the pic and bent it at each end. I then took the sides and bent them in to tuck up inside the fenders. I also ran some sheetmetal screws with washers through the holes in the very top to hold it to the core support. Currently I have the whole front clip off of the thing and am about to totally redo the front so I dont know what Im going to do again for a grill.
