Mr. Clean's dune cruising 71' K5 "Oprah" beams, links, and turbo ls powwwa

Another note.... If you are crawling, IMO it is really not so bad to max a shock out on articulation. But if you are going fast in the dunes and constantly maxing them out in either direction, you are gonna kill them WAY FAST.

Well you apparently need to come crawling with me.

Yah i will have to see. I feel if i can get my shackles longer and get my springs flat at bump and then relocate my shocks vertical that i will be able to use most of the shock. I may hit the bottom of my floor with the top of my shock going vertical bit im not opposed to cutting a hole for clearance.

I almost said "unless you are Eric" in that post.... :haha:

:D. Plenty of guys crawl like me but its fairly commen to have one end or the other droop out dang near instantly. If your using shocks as limit straps they are gonna kill the shocks fast. But it's only been in the last couple of years that lots of guys in the crawling world are recognizing the value of tune able shocks

What is cool about a bypass shock is that you can tune a bump and a droop zone into them, which IMO would elliminate the need for straps in a crawler situation. Even if it drops fast, the shock will slow it down right at the last 2 inches or so.

regardless of speed
with my shocks mounted in the stock location out back, I will probably kill the frame mounts quicker than the shocks lol

hyjack off

when I get Horton up here I will see what I have but I think that's pretty close. I don't remember what it was exactly

Yea dude those are too short, and I am gonna bag on a few guys on here but yall need to ditch that compression shackle, for high speed stuff you'll see way more benefit from the tension or stock type, you can run a longer shackle it will drop more because of that its better for the spring cause you can run more arch and it also helps the pinion along with reducing the anti squat. So it's a win win win.. Problem for you is it will lower your truck a lot.. If you take those springs and get them rearched to 12-13 inches it will work a lot better and you'll use that shock and then some...

I think with dune season already upon me I am really just trying to get what I already have in place working to the best that it can. Next winter I plan on getting a custom set of springs made either ord's or deavers and I will redo the set up. for the the time being its going to be get as much travel as I can out of these. Run them for the summer and re visit it next winter.

In that case, I would just do the longer shackle, and relocate the shocks. They are obviously not optimally placed right now. That should get you comfortably through the season.

Alright so I was able to make some new shackles today went from a 4.5" to a 7"shackle now. I also relocated my shocks and got them vertical above the axle. Good news will be that I have enough clearance I don't need to cut my floor and poke them thru. With those changes I now am pulling 11.5"s of travel out of my springs which makes me much happier then the 9"s yesterday. I even threw my paddles on at full bump to see what I had for clearance and no issues there at all so i'm pumped about that. Tomorrow I am going to begin getting cans tacked in place and also taking measurements for a new drive shaft.:thumb:

I just added extensions to my exsisting ORD shackles. I will be tying the backside together yet as well I am going to grind down these welds and fish plate over top of my seem to add some strength to them. These are now 7" shackles.

ahahaha

full "stuff" huh? lol

looks better, poor leaves are permanently bent but I'm sure with the others bolted in it will look better

:D Agreed. I've run limit straps in the back of my crawler for years and I've caught some flack for it (or really just lots of "why do you think you need straps with leaf springs?" kind of situations) but my shocks are in fantastic shape and they've seen a ton of trail and dune miles.

Yup. Look at all the go fast leaf spring setups and this is the case.

That being said I understand the whole, dealing with what you have in order to go play situation you are in and I think you addressed it appropriately.

How are you going to show everyone your remote resi shocks without holes in the floor.. Lol

I'm too lazy to go back through the thread, but are you running blocks in the back?

Well I overslept today and didn't get as much shop time as I was wanting. I was able to get both of my rear bump cans at least tacked into place so tomorrow I can work on bracing. Shooting to have the rear wrapped up by Friday so I can move onto the front, and tying my cage to the frame.
