Muddysub's Toyota crawler.

So I assume you're going to be making some changes to the drivetrain mounts?

You didn't say how the new spring pack went.

Yeah I'll be looking into better mounts. I need it to stop raining first. The springs did great! It's a more comfortable ride and I didn't carry tires nearly as often as I used to. The new lower ride height resulted in some steering clearance issues but I'll get that handled.

one difference is mine are all trailer queens while you actually drive yours on the street. I generally wheel all weekend on a bottle and will take an extra with me in case I do run out.

if we were closer I have a 22R in my engine shed for a spare that still has the EFI on it, I don't know how much is there and how much is missing or if you could even get it to work on yours.

I really really dig your little rig, does good and you are able to drive it there and back on the closer wheeling trips.

some friends and I are planning on coming up for Trail Hero

Yeah I don't have room for a trailer right now so I need the yota to be streetable. I looked at gotpropane.com yesterday and even after buying tanks it's cheaper than most EFI systems. I like the idea of propane because of the lack of mechanical components. If I relocated the battery I could mount a tank in the bed. Do the tanks have to be mounted horizontally? If you come out to trail hero, get a hold of me!

you can mount them vertical. although I have heard differing opinions on whether the pickup has to be different between horizontal or vertical. I plan on having 2 tanks mounted in my X Chassis as it has a 4.3 in it.

Well I got some shit done this weekend. New Marlin Crawler t-case mounts installed, motor mounts modified to keep them from coming apart, hand throttle installed and we figured out that none of Daisy's old fans will fit between the engine and radiator. I still need to modify the carb for hills and finish up (start, lol) the floor/boot setup. I didn't take many pictures, except after I was done tinkering with my rifle.

So I still have a gigantic hole in the floor but I got some other shit done today.

I modified the carb to make it climb hills better. The fuel bolt vents into the throat of the carb, when you climb ledges or hills it dumps fuel into the carb and floods it. So you JB weld that thing shut, drill into an unused port on the carb, tap the end of that port and run it off to the charcoal canister. I also installed a fuel pressure regulator and got it dialed down to 1.5psi where it should be. I went to fix a coolant leak at the thermostat housing. Found a stripped hole and no thermostat. No wonder it runs so cool. So I stuck a 180* stat in there, tapped the holes a little deeper and used a couple longer bolts to hold the housing down.

Nice interested to see how the carb does.

Well, worse and worse every time I drive it.

I compression tested my engine this morning and cylinder #1 is only making 50 psi. Cylinders 2, 3 & 4 are making 90, 95 & 110 psi. So I'm guessing that's the cause of my crankcase pressure issue.

Now for the real problem. I hate this f***ing carburetor!!!

The bowl vent is now redirected into the charcoal canister, fuel pressure is at 2psi, the idle mixture screw is 2.5turns out and the idle speed is set at 900rpm. I haven't messed with the floats yet but will once the engine cools off. When I installed the pressure regulator and modified the bowl vent I found that my engine hasn't had a thermostat in it the whole time I've owned it, so I installed one. Now that it actually hits operating temperature it runs like hell. Last time we took it out wheeling it would sputter and cough like hell every 10 minutes or so. If I caught it early enough I could hold the throttle open and get past it and she would run smoothly again. If I didn't and it stalled, it would take a lot of work to fire back up. Cranking it with the pedal on the floor is the only way to get it to restart when it stalls, even then it takes a minute to fire back up. Just now it idled for 20min or so, hit about 200*, I tried to take it for a drive and didn't even make it out of the driveway. Eventually I'll put propane or EFI on this thing but it would be nice to be able to play with it in the meantime. I guess I'll go adjust the float height and see what happens.

That lazy cylinder...

Bad rings or bad valves?

Where there goes my theory. Of a intake issue from the carb because 1-4 are on the same runner, 2-3 are on their on runner.

Both valves closed, Charge the cylinder with an air compressor and see if the Air comes out the exhaust, the intake, or the breather

I'd try about 80-90 lbs

It's all blowing out through the valve cover and dipstick tube so I'm sure it's the rings. I'll get a video tomorrow, when you remove the oil fill cap on the valve cover it blows off in your hand. I half tempted to in-frame it. Pull the head and the rod cap, pop the piston out and see what's going on. I might be able to hone & re-ring it.

I'm also tempted to pull the trigger on a gotpropane kit.

Of course a GM 4.3L V6 would be pretty neat too. I bet the cases and axles would hold up to that.

Yep rings shot

4.3 might be cheap. 2.4 ecotech would be cool

If you like the way it wheels now. I'd just rebuild the 22r. decide on propane b4 you do it and if so then rebuild the motor to run on propane. If you went V6 then you'd need to go V6, turbo 350, adapter. They don't make a V6 adapter to the toyota transmission that I'm aware of. and that turbo 350 adapter is not cheap. Also I believe its longer overall, so you have that to factor in also.

There is a 4.3 to toyota trans adapter somewhere. Co-worker is running that setup in his Samurai.
