Muddysub's Toyota crawler.

I got some work done on the little tractor the other day. The new steering pump is in, along with an inline filter since I cut the screen out of the reservoir. I had my hydro assist hoses routed backwards so I swapped them at the cylinder and stamped “L” and “R” into the gearbox near the fittings to keep that from happening again. I fixed the heater so it actually blows hot now and I fixed a coolant leak.

When I was done with all that I rolled it into the street and finally did something I’ve always wanted to. Learned something from it too. My front springs are doing all the work, those rears are too stiff so I’m going to mess with a different shackle and removing a leaf from the pack.

My K5 is opposite, my rear 64s are doing everything. What springs do you have out back?

They’re 52” tuff country chevy springs.

So yesterday I went to @Fastereddie house and ended up bringing home his old Blazer rear springs. I took them apart today, removed a leaf or two, swapped bushings and cleaned them up. I threw in a cut down overload to add some ride height but it’s still pretty low. The shocks don’t have much uptravel right now. I wish it had 12” shocks instead of 14s. I have a set of zero rates I can add to them, I think I’ll do that tomorrow.

Time to do some through bed shock hoops. I bet that thing is pretty light out back.

I’m thinking about ditching the bed after KOH. I want to build a new bed, I could make something more useful than what’s on there. So the shocks will be rearranged at some point.

Son of a bitch!! I started hearing a noise from the rear diff out at KOH, I was hoping the locker broke but that one piece is definitely the tip of a ring gear tooth. Looks like I’m doing that again.

Chevy makes a really cool rear axle did not make it for that long think it is called a 14 bolt or something........

Ford did one also but they call it a 9 in bit smaller then a 14 bolt relatively as strong too. :pimp:

I think I should be regearing, 5.71s are known to be weaker than 5.29s. Everyone tells me that they’re my weak link, including our gear guru @blazinzuk. I know people who wheel harder than me on 40s with yota axles, but not with 5.71 gears. I’ll check tomorrow to see my price on parts from Yukon with our account at work.

Super bummed.

I did have a good time at KOH though. Can’t believe I’ve never gone before. I can’t wait to go back to JV.

9 in from a early Bronco may be a really close fit. Lots of gear and strength options.

I know it is a Ford part but the Toy's axles seem to be getting lunched rather easy.

I thought those rear springs woulda flexed more than that..esp after Eric stretched them out like he did

I replaced those with a set of stock K5 rear s from @Fastereddie, I pulled a few leaves and they ride SO NICE! This thing cruises across the desert so much better than it used to. Everyone that rode in it at KOH mentioned how nice the ride was.

yep, I always heard that about 5.71's.

5.29s and install kits are on the way. I hope this changes things, I’m tired of this thing being down for differential work.
