My 1990 K5 Blazer build

Got my 14bff last night. Those bastards are HEAVY. Now I just gotta find a way to get it OUT of the K5. :haha:

Needs a good cleaning, but I'm going to take it apart and clean it really well, shave it, build a new diff cover for it, and do the disc brake conversion. :)

dhcomp had a nice thread about getting axles out of his Suburban recently.

Did it involve giving beer to friends to have them do it for him? Because that would be my ideal option. :haha:

But seriously, thanks for the heads up, I'll try and find that.

I believe it may have involved that but mainly it was an engine hoist.

FWIW, the way I did it in the past was pull it out till one of the drums could be laid on the ground and the other was on the tail gate. Then you can either lift the other drum while someone drives the truck out from under it, or you can have another person help you lift the other drum off the tail gate and set it down. Either way, you use two people, but it's pretty manageable. And, you should be having a second person helping you set it down in all situations so you don't mess up your back in case you aren't using proper lifting form.

Oh I'll definitely have two people. My buddy a few houses down owes me for all those test fits of his new 60" TV. :haha:

I am finally recovered from those two compressed discs, I am all about extra help and proper lifting techniques now!

Are you going to be doing any work to it before you put it in your truck? If so, you might consider putting it on two saw horses which also have a 2x4 across them upon which the pinion can sit.

Yep, I will be. I normally use two tall jackstands and a low rolling seat, but I like your idea better!

Got it in the garage, this thing was friggin HEAVY!

It's pretty sad right now unfortunately. :(

I swapped in a built 6-spd in place of the automatic, then about a year the oil pump bit it and fried the bearings. I thought I shut it down in time, never knocked but the bearings looked like crap. Been building a mean little LQ9 for it over the last year or so. I'm hoping to paint the engine bay one weekend soon and then drop the engine in over my Christmas break.

LQ9 shortblock
ARP rod/head/main bolts
Milled/3-angled/ported LQ9 heads
Futral F13 cam - 230"/232" .595"/.585" 112LSA
PP Typhoon intake with ported and polished throttle body
LS6 oil pump, ported and polished (not going to lose this one!)
Stainless longtubes, no cats
150shot wet nitrous kit

This thing is going to be effin' mean.

Here it is a few days before the engine went out.

Sweet. My buddies big into those cars, he saw me checkin the axle pic. Looks nasty man!!! :D

I've had this one for 7 years now. The thing is a blast to drive, should be even better with a few hundred more ponies. :)

Probably not all my toys. :haha:

I'm currently swapping a 3.8L in place of the 3.3L in my 95 Plymouth Voyager minivan. Wooooooooooooo!

:haha:

Worked on the axle some tonight. Got the one side completely stripped, pulled out the carrier and ring gear, and that's about it. The one side with the drum still on it has the key rusted in, I poked at it a bit but the thing is stuck really well in there. Plus I couldn't find my special socket for the hub nut. I know where my 36mm one is, I guess I've been working on IFS stuff too much recently.

Tomorrow I'll buy another one and get the axle completely torn down. Then I'm going to clean it out, sand it down, and spray it with some nice thick black paint.

My biggest concern with the 14 bolt I see in the pic is the rusty spindle. What were your plans for getting that cleaned up enough to keep seals from being eaten up and leaking? Speedi-sleeve and some TLC? Is it pitted at all?

Not sure what you paid for it, but I woulda passed on that. It's not like those spindles unbolt.
