My 5.3 swap thread!

Ok fellers, game plan. I think by the end of the night tonight I should have the thing pretty well ready to start. So I think tomorrow morning I will be able to start it!

Ok heres the vids. Exhaust is only about 8" past the manifolds. First start is my buddy Scott(Pinsco63) turning the key, Tim running the throttle, me filming. Second is Tim turning the key, Scott running the throttle and me filming. Sounds good and it sounds bad ass!!!! Hope you got your nut cups on, cause your about to get punched in the dick!

Congrats on getting it fired up.
Looks all went well.
Now for more feed back on how it is.

Awesome!!!

Now quit screwin around and get it driving. I want to know how it goes.

Thanks fellas! As my buddies and i keep saying, "now its just the small stuff"... Its just funny because over the years we have all come to find out that the "small stuff" is the time consuming part! When this project started i gave myself a couple months to get it done. So far its been 33 days sense i picked up the new motor. So its looking like the two month mark is pretty accurate for me. I really think now after being this far in that if a person were as prepared as possible, they could get the swap done in two weekends.

Couple lessons learned so far,

Put the power steering line on before you drop the motor in or you will have to pull the bracket off like me.

Just go ahead and get the dirty dingo mounts. The ability to slide the motor back and forth would have been nice i think.

It would be way easier, tho not as aesthetically pleasing to mount the computer on the fender rather then in the cab.

Im sure there is more but thats all i got for now.

I'd still mount the computer in the cab, underhood is a much harsher environment.

For comparison I swapped my 350 out of my Jimmy and swapped in a 6.2 diesel, and took approx two months to do it. :doah:

Thats awesome. Spend a year fukin with TBI, then in a month you get the 5.3 in and going.

Good job man.

A year!? more like 5 miserable expensive frustrating years! That thing ran bad from day effing one! Bah! Anyway, thanks!

EDIT: Little more ranting on the stupid TBI ecpereince. If i just would have put a 5.3 in it 5 years ago, i could have spent all the time and money i wasted on the tbi and put it towards learning and tuning the 5.3 computer! Not that it really needs it but it looks like a fun thing to play with.

List of sensors and things i replaced/did on the TBI setup,

map
TPS
o2 twice
temp sensor
IAC
ign module
knock sensor
distributer
spark plugs x4
Tried different spark plugs
plug wires
cap and rotor
computer twice
had the injectors rebuilt and flow matched
throttle body rebuilt with new FPR and re bushed throttle shafts
replaced intake manifold gaskets
adjusted the rockers x 3-4
advanced cam timing
bought all the chip burning equipment
tuned the chip in the computer for a couple months
endlessly played with the timing
endlessly checked for vacuum leaks
replaced fuel pump and filter
checked compression x3
replaced coil
egr valve
disabled egr valve
made one of those "adjustable map senors"
replaced vacuum lines
checked fuel pressure x3

Im sure there is more but thats all i can think of.

As far as the power steering goes. Yes, but mine wasn't like that because of the PSC pump I got has AN6 fittings.

Dirty Dingo mounts worked out great. If it wasn't for the ability to move it back an forth I would have had to pull it back out because of how tight it is to the Firewall in places.

As for the computer I'm planing on mounting mine on the driver side battery tray just like it is in an 07.This is on my wife's suburban. I'm going to try and use one of these mounts.

Yea man for sure! You could come check it out any time or else when i do get it on the road we could meet up someplace.

Teck, the power steering line is all but impossible to get to once the motor is in the truck because the cross member goes right underneath it. The gen 4 computers look cooler to me! I'll have to get a gen 4 setup next time ;)

It is tight once it is in,but not that bad with the AN fittings. I also had the front clip off when I hooked mine up.

wtg man!!! amazing that I've been watching this process from the beginning and how fast you got to this point.
this will definitely be an information thread to keep for reference.
