My 5.3 swap thread!

The single wire on the plug goes to the big brown wire. Just ground that wire and make sure that the alternator idiot light comes on to confirm it is the right one.

It would be better to hook that up to the grey wire from the factory 5.3L connector, but it isn't a requirement!

So are you saying that normally there is two wires in the factory 5.3 connector? Cause mine only has one and maybe thats why im getting cornfuzed.

Ok so hows aboot this,

and this,

Means i should hook the brown wire to pin C and the pink/black to pin b?

Just for fun, here is my new alt plug,

And old one.

And I noticed how similar the mounting points looked between the two motors for the alternater so I tried it out,

It was close but no cigar...

I had the smaller alt cs130 on my S10. I grabbed a new 140amp alt from an '04 fullsize truck. They swap perfectly, but I needed to run a 1" longer belt for the pulley size difference.

They should swap in if I'm on the same page as you.

You know, thinking back on it I don't remember ever having the charge idiot light come on. Is that bad? All i have is a gauge unless that bulb is burnt out.

Your 90 should have the light in the bottom left hand gauge opening. They have a few different lights in there, IIRC

If you don't have an idiot light for the alternator, then you need to install a 500 ohm (ish) 1/2 - 1 watt resistor between the brown wire on the alternator and a 12V ignition power source to simulate an idiot light

Ok. Thanks for staying patient with me through the most difficult part of the swap, the alternater! LOL

Thats me! Anyway, watch this video. Its exactly what mine looks like when it starts and there appears to be no charge light. Cause the charge light should come on with key on and engine not running right? Wonder if i can un pin my old connector and stick those pins in the new one?

Made some none too exciting progress today. Set the intake back on and layed out the wiring how I want it. Then I routed the battery cables and hooked them up. Also bolted on the starter and went ahead and powered up the system to check that it all works and to test a couple wires. Went pretty well. I have to work tomorrow which sucks and could potentially scrap my plans for a test start next weekend but we'll see. I still have to buy o2 sensors, adapt the exhaust, and change out the fuel pump. As well as a few other more minor things. Going to be a tall order to get all of it done on Sunday and before work during the week. If all else fails I'll test start it the weekend after next! No big deal.

Man, work has been making it really difficult to have time to work on this thing! Funny how that happens... Anyway, tried dropping the fuel tank today. F that! I'm doing what I should have done a long time ago and cutting an access panel in the floor! Probably won't get to that until Wednesday cause I got some running around to do tomorrow. Also started working on the exhaust today. Got the pie cut out of the down pipe and should be able to pick up my adapter pieces tomorrow. So, by the end of the week I should have some ok updates. But I'm not quite counting on the test fire this weekend now.

I don't want to read through 300 some odd post to see what car this is going in. But dropping the tank isn't THAT bad. On my blazer 2 straps and some hoses and it came right down. Took me maybe an hour to remove the tank install new pump and reinstall. Hardest part was sticking my hand inside the tank to fix the splash box.
