My 5.3 swap thread!

love car-part.com.. i used that and called the local place that quoted me $1100 for everything..

i got my caddy eldo calipers with levers from them and other stuff... :thumb:

Just a little non update. Haven't driven it anymore yet cause it still needs tags. There is a few things with the truck itself that i knew would drive me nuts if I started driving it before I fixed. Among those is the stereo and slow windows. So, I'm thinking I'm going to take the rest of egr month and do all the stuff I would have wanted to if i never would have had to mess with the motor in the first place.

I feel lots of the 6.0L's are coming out of fleet type trucks, hence the mileage.....

All the 5.3's are lower mileage.

Smog wise though, don't think i can legally go with a smaller displacement motor than i currently have....

If it came out of a light duty truck, it's legal in Ca....

No updates really. It needs new tags before i can drive it on the streets. In the mean time I'm working on some stuff i would have been working on if i never would have done the motor swap. Today I plan backing it into the garage and get started on mounting the ecm. As far as the power goes, I don't know. I have only been able to go about half throttle on my little dead end street. I don't know that it will be an extreme difference but i can tell you now that it seems more peppy and responsive. I think at wide open it will definitely be faster but the bottom line is- It's a suburban with 3.73 gears, a th400, 33s and less then 300 HP and about 335 tq. It's not going to be "fast" with those numbers. It will however, be better than when it had about 190 HP and 300 tq.

Worked a bit on mounting the computer. Its going to be quite a chore im affraid... Its alot bigger then the factory computer so there is no way of mounting it where the old one was. Add to that that my harness is about a foot too long for it to mount there and it just aint happening. So, it looks like it will work out ok in the passenger side kickpanel area. The lame thing is 1, i will be losing the recirculate door, and two, that it will hang about 2" below the bottom of the dash. The silver lining is that i can use the little plastic piece that use to cover the recirculate door diaphram, to cover the lower hanging pice to make it look factory. So, it will probably take me a few days before work to get it finallized. But i'll be sure and get pics when im done!

Anyway, here is the few crappy pics I did get. Kinda gives an idea of what's going on. But first, a change of scenery. Backed the truck in for the first time. Sure ran good doing it!

Grab a buddy who can fake a food allergy or asthma attack, sit him shotgun, hit the open the flashers and tear down the open road...just tell the po-po that's the only vehicle you had to rush them to medical attention. Or to their home to get inhaler/epipen etc. :D

Also, you dont need to have the a/c re charged if you are keeping your current a/c compressor. They make brakets to mount the compressor where it is now but on the LS motors!

Do you have any info on this specific bracket?

Not that exact one. I googled something like ls1 12 compressor swap or something. I will try to find it again. I think kwik performance has them also.

I plan on ditching the R4 style compressor for a sanden. In which case you can run this style setup form kwik

Might be a dumb question but did you take out the orginal wire harness ,do I still need it in there for my 5.3 swap in my 90 k5 for anything? ???

You don't remove it entirely. You remove everything relates to the old fuel injection, but the fuel injection harness is intertwined with the engine harness. So what i did(its several pages back) is got myself a wiring diagram for the computer, and clipped out any wires that went to the computer.

I decided that I never liked wires,.so I'm going with the painless wire harness .my 5.3 came with the truck one. I think its plug and play???
