My 5.3 swap thread!

Sure was a good day today. Truck runs really good! Good enough that i went ahead and bolted the hood back on! After that I went ahead and swapped spots with it and the blazer and installed the new stereo I got for Christmas for it. Sounds really good! So, today was one of those days where things just went good! Type of day where you accomplish multiple things without much hangup!

Nice to see you are able to actually drive it.
Whats up with the water temp sending unit?
I'm just hoping mine works where I installed it in the water pump.

I took a chance on the VDO sending unit cause it looked like a turned down version of the stock one. So its got the wrong resistance at whatever temp. So, for the time being i just watched the scanner to see what it was seeing for temperature. If i just would have done what im about to end up doing(getting an adapter for a stock sending unit) all would have been well... But, with just a few minor exceptions, its ready for the highway!

1BEATK5, You just stop them wheels or like me, you will just end up doing it!

I say just do it, it's not really that hard or a big deal if you do some homework first and make a plan of what all you will need to get it done.
But what do I know, I just about finish a frame off rebuild, so to me it has been about as easy as changing out a regular small block, with a few small changes.

OK, I have a question. Seems to be a good place to ask this as so many are watching this thread.

What if all you can find are the drive by wire engines? And I want to keep a 700R4. Can the DBW engines be swapped to drive by cable so I can utilize the 700R4 TV cable?

I don't mind swapping the truck over to DBW but can't find a good hook up for the TV cable.

Option 1 is to run the tv cable into the cab and connect it to the pedal. Option two is to swap to the cable style throttle body. It's super easy. Unbolt the electronic tb and bolt on the cable one. Only thing is you need a harness and computer for a cable style.

I was told you have to change the intake also. One style is 3 bolt the other is 4 bolt. Itink the computer and harness can be made to work. These are the reasons I want ahead and just got a 4l65E. And on another note about that a 4l60E will not work with a Gen IV computer, they don't have one of the sensor in them so they don't shift correctly.

Your signature still says 4l60e...

Oh and the computer on the drive by wire stuff does not have the iac driver installed on it which is the problem. There are a few random dbw computers that do still have the driver but I think they are all express vans. That lt1swap web site has some really good info on that. Seems like maybe chevythunder.com did too.

I need to change it. Didn't know when I got it what the difference was. But the one I got was out of an 08 so it should be a 65. Found all that out about a month ago, after it was built and installed. Will know for sure in a week or 2 when it running.
If it not a 65 then this will be a very costly f'up, in the amount of almost 3 grand. So I didnt want to see anyone else make thus kind of mistake.

Here is one off of a 04. has the three bolt pattern just like mine.

On a side note, this is what i love about these engines. You can get an intake with throttle body and injectors for $120 or less!

good to see this thing on the road man!

I like the idea of gathering all of the info into one thread too. there is some good stuff floating around. I have several bookmarked threads. :D

oh, and for what its worth, I was planning on putting this swap off until next year, but I may have lucked out on getting a motor. I found a guy that buys late model trucks, but pretty much only wants the body panels and doors off of them. I assume he runs an auto body shop or something. anyway, he quoted me ~$700 for a 6.0 with everything I could want still attached. $500 for a 5.3. he didn't have a 6.0 in stock, but said he buys a new truck about once a week. if it works out, we may see a swap thread soon. :D
