My '70 C/10 - The Rat Bastard... [Won't Idle.]

Okay....

The starter is cranking slowly.
Way too slowly.
At first, I thought it wasnt engaging the flywheel,
But watching the belt told me otherwise.

Checked the Starter Pinion-to-flywheel clearance.
Cleaned all the grounds.
And, made sure the battery voltage stayed above 11v during cranking.

Short of hitting the mounting pad with a wire wheel, for ground purposes, I'm stumped.
Could slow cranking be a "bad out of the box" symptom?
Just trying to cover everything before I have to go back to the parts house.
 
My 402 starts easily on 20*ish base timing. Of course I doubt it has much compression.

10 should spin fine... but I would have someone crank it while you move the dizzy to check....
 
So.... Theres a 4v drop in my Battery>Starter cable. :doah:

These cables are BRAND NEW.
But, I guess Stupid Duty's have this problem too.
The remedy being thicker cable.

This sh*t is getting ridiculous.
 
make sure its true copper wire not the newer aluminum / copper coated stuff.

aluminum only lets around 60-65% power threw from what I have heard over the years .
 
4 is a bit small, unless you did a solenoid swap which I don't think you have done.

Go get some welding cable should be all copper and it should be good.

My problem was using a 4ga starter cable...
I think that was a fail.

I'll be curious to see if replacing just the positive side fixes it. IMO, #4 would be fine for short lengths like battery to starter and has been on my trucks. I'm curious if your ground side is problematic.

Just like the positive side, the ground side also has to be high-capacity, have clean connections, and not be corroded, etc (Mike, you know all this, but this is for the edification of the general readership.)

Then you start singing the song of "The engine ground is connected to the frame ground, and the frame ground is connected to the body ground, and the body ground is connected to the battery ground", which can be a circuitous loop.

And everybody does theirs differently and when engine swaps are done the block ground often gets forgotten or done differently than before...

...which is a long way of saying "how are your grounds?" :D

just for kicks . . .

you do have a good block to frame ground ?

and then a frame to battery ground ?

I know some people forget the block to frame ground some times . seen it make a huge difference before.
 
put a booster pack right to the starter.. we do that sh*t all the time.... GM ran 4 g on ton's of stuff...

Could these being connected, be the problem?
Thats the Bat. Neg.>Block, and Block>Frame.

Note: The ground surface has since been wire wheeled.
