My '70 C/10 - The Rat Bastard... [Won't Idle.]

Is this deja vu?
Didn't you ditch the msd before for the exact same reason?

The Beast ate ICM's, Alternators, plug wires, fusible links, etc....
that was more than likely an electrical issue.
The previous owner was an a$$hole, when it came to the wiring. :doah:

MSD box's get blamed for a lot of stuff.
I think most of it has to do improper install, and other components failing.
And, that people seem to not understand a lot of electrical stuff.
That is in NO way a dig, at chevy305... Bad outta the box, is bad outta the box.

Like how important resistance is, what the requirements are,
That COILS cause ICM's to fail (most cases), not the other way around,
And most ignition issues happen to be other components.... Not the MSD box.
I love CD ignitions.

Although, just replacing the ICM would be WAY easier/cheaper/Faster.

Can you change the amount of Mechanical Advance a Delco distributor has?
As in, mine has 16* of mech. advance @ 3k rpm.... Can I modify it to have more?

I ask, because It could use a rebuild.
That's the only thing holding me back from doing it.

I thought that's what the spring kits did.

I think they just change the rate at which the weights advance.
Not, the actual amount of total mechanical advance.

But, I guess thats where Im not really sure.

I just really dont want to spend $$$$ on a distributor. :doah:

Googling says there are different size weights / center plates.

What ones ya looking at? I also may want to buy myself a bday gift tomorrow lol. I've been looking at dizzys.

Go grab an MSD streetfire HEI and be done...

No.... Go grab THE EXACT SAME THING, from Skip White, for $45 on eBay.
Its literally the EXACT DUPLICATE of an MSD Streetfire Dizzy.
Minus the MSD sticker and $125 price tag.

I talked to a couple people and read some reviews.
The Skip White HEI's are StreetFire HEI's.
The same internals, bodies, gear, wires, coil, module, and vaccum advance.

Sometimes throwing money at the problem is a reasonable solution. Especially if you get known good factory-type parts  :haha:

(And let it not be said that I am unfair: sometimes throwing money at the problem is a total waste, and I'm guilty of this too :) )

diagnostics be damned! :woot: :pimp: :saweet: :weld: :grind:

I wish I could tell my customers that.... :doah:  :haha:

Well, do your customers come in saying "I have put in all these totally non-stock mismatched parts and now it doesn't work" ?

(Mike, that's not a dig at you, but the typical CK5'er attitude of mixing in damn near any GM -- or other -- part of any era. That whole "upgrade" thing can really bite you in the butt... leastaways it's bitten *me* in the butt :haha: The trick is first to make it work, then to make it work better. Though "better" can be kinda vague -- what's that about three alternators? :D )

all bet's are off when my customer work on their own stuff, and do more often than not stoooopid stuff.. and TRUST me, 98% of the time, customers working on their own stuff is not a good thing, contrary to how much they love their boat.. and how many magazine articles they read....

and here's a bit of Ryoken insight... :haha:

as a marine mechanic, I'm ALL about stock.. it generally HAS to be... unless your dealing with some goofy homebrewed hotrod skiff stuff, which, in reality, isn't the marine biz per se for me... "hotrodding" a 36 Sundancer, is not a wise choice let's just say...

that said... as many can tell from my builds, I love custom.. :pimp: and am a proponent of aftermarket parts on many occasions.. they are often improved over factory stuff.... often, but not always...

that said again... :haha: it always boils down to diagnostics, figuring out what's wrong... throwing parts at problems is not acceptable for a wrench that your paying money to...

your own chit? throw fort knox at it for all I care!!!! :woot: :haha: :woot:

sorry, alkyhal talkin for me...

I don't particularly has a prob with cd boxes.. but unless your running a potent mill, it tends to confuse the issue imo and not previde any benefit....

I have faith you'll figure it out thoo... :D
