Also, a properly running engine usually will run "fine" with a solid 1/4" hole for a vacuum leak. So a slightly cracked rubber plug, isnt going to cause it to run like full on crap.

my boss does too.. it was the only way he was taught..

there are circumstances I use that method too.. unfamiliar 4 cyl genny's, etc.. but with standard chevy gas V8's, I've found the 2 position method mentioned to be way faster/easier..
 
I have just seen race engines were the overlap is enough to throw off the lash on a much with the 2 position.
 
Ive seen a guy I worked with blow the valve cover out on a motor from this happening and then it firing.

Had the oil cap on a Corvair fly right past my ear, ricochet of the deck lid and land about 20 feet behind me while trying to get it to fire using a remote starter and leaning over the engine moving the distributer while cranking.
Definitely got my adrenaline pumping.

I had my red truck running real bad and could NEVER get it right.... ended up being the vacuum ball wouldn't hold vac. pumped down and held it would bleed off slow.... took it out entirely and it was a night and day difference immediately. a few cracks could easily make it run bad
 
I hear ya. The flip side though is that i have had an engine that never got the brake booster line on the back of the carb screwed back in and was just laying on the back of the engine. Some timing work, idle adjutments, and idle mixture adjutments, and it was running pretty good. Just not quite smooth. Another engine had what apeared to be ajust a bolt boss in the intake, turn out to be an actual through hole into the intake. Only found out when i was hosing the engine down with the pressure washer and watcherd the puddle of water on the intake get sucked into the hole! That car actually ran really well even with that big 3/8 hole direct into the intake. Those are the two examples i can think of off the top of my head of carbed vehicles that i actually worked on. I had the throttle body base gasket go bad on the burb years ago and a 1/4 of it had sucked into the intake. Still ran pretty decent. But had a stumble on acceleration and idle wasnt quite smooth.

The point im trying to make is that yes, it can make it not run good, but a couple cracked vacuum plugs will not make it un drivable.
