my backup lights suck.

Swung by O'Reilly's today on lunch. NADA and the guy was looking at me like I was hopping up and down spouting gibberish as I explained what I was looking for.

Then again he didn't even know what the rating was of the regular bulbs and seemed confused as to where 35w, 50w, and 12v all went in the big picture of electricity and light bulbs.

Now that I have other things fixed (or surviving) I'm just going to install those add on lights soon.

i went to local auto parts store and found some back-up bulbs rated at 50 watts. not nearly as bright at a seperate light fixture, but definately a much brighter light and is noticeable while backing.

Hrm, I actually now live where O'Reilly's exist...have to give them a call.

For the record I've ran other 50w backup bulbs in plastic sockets without dramatic episodes. Others on here have reported doing so as well...bet that's just a CYA label by the maker.

Definitely not JUST a CYA by the manufacturer. I have seen a CJ7 and also another vehicle that I forgot what it was... when stuck for a long time, left it in reverse while we were hooking up and planning... melted the actual tail light itself. Not all the way through or anything, but enough to distort the tail light itself though.

Just daily driving... probably never a problem though.

Yeah. Few years ago someone mentioned their friend who plowed snow rewiring and redoing his tail lights so they used some small headlight bulb. Said the guy had fantastic rear visibility but wouldn't be survivable for long if he wasn't only in reverse for a few seconds at a time.
