My build-DOWN thread...

now that's what I call a road-trip

I hope to do the same some day...but I will do the East Coast first

So from now on, All posting about the burb will be in this thread. Babaganoosh inspired me to want to make it to Blazer Bash. I cant go this year as im already taking a vacation. So i want to make it to 2015 BB. At the same time, i will be on an epic road trip. From Portland, to Yellowstone, down to Moab, to Phoenix, And home through Vegas, grand canyon, and crater lake and finally home to Portland. It will be an epic 3000+ mile trip with 52 hours total drive time.

So, the moral of the story is, i have about a year and a half to get the truck all the way done and road worthy. The list of to do's is long, but not too overwhelming. List goes something like this.

Rebuild steering box
replace front pinion seal
rebuild/replace front drive shaft
paint the door jambs
new front window motors
window relays
new stereo and speakers
new headliner
air conditioning
new front brakes
reseal transfer-case
xj steering shaft
cruise control

and probably several other little things.

So here is where i will be posting progress and questions. First thing on the actual to do list is window motors and relays. Followed by painting the door jambs.

hell yes!!! that sounds like an awesome trip man! if you need a place to stay in vegas, i've got an extra room and i'm right off the highway as you roll into town from AZ. it'd be sweet to see both of our suburbans in my driveway!

We could at least meet up for lunch or something! I have ordered a few parts to finish it up. I just have to finish a buddy's truck that I'm working on before I can get back to the burb! Too bad I'm working all weekend... Anyway, I'm pretty confident that I will achieve this goal. Mostly because I have been intending on going to see my grandpa in Phoenix for a few years now. And my wife and I both have been absolutely dieing to see some of the national parks since we watched the latest Ken Burns documentary about them. Should be awesome.

Obviously, the biggest reason for taking the burb is so i can stick a mattress in the back and we can sleep mostly in the truck. With maybe a couple few hotels along the way so as to be able to shower here and there.

Forgot to add Yo Semite in there, but as it gets closer i'll start doing a lot more checking into details and spots i need to see.

Im so fking excited! I almost wish i wasn't going to Mexico this year so i could do it sooner!

To be honest, i think at least 30% of my excitement stems from being excited to have a goal of getting the burb done for a reason. Previously, i had just been fixing it up cause it was in such sad shape but no real plans to do anything major with it. Was just fixing it up so it could be in good shape as it sits. So the fact that im going to be having the mindset of getting it ready for something that i had really intended on using it for as kid, is really enjoyable. Know what im saying? The thought of having dialed back into road trip worthy status (I haven't considered it "road trip worthy for at least 7 years...) Is quite exhilarating.

I love the Brady Bunch episode where they go to the Grand Canyon, and I love the National Lampoon's Vacation movie...I love the idea of loading up and going on a road trip

make sure you take your time and document your trip real good...the whole way...so make plenty of photos of anything interesting along the way and be prepared to share them with us when you get back

Im still trying to figure out how much time i need to actually figure on it taking. Im not sure if i can do it in 9 days or if it needs to be more like 16 days or somewhere in between. But i will do my best to take lots of pics and document my journey the way mosesburb does.

I love old roadside kitsche...I want to drive old Route 66 if there is anything left....that's why I like the movie Cars

I am a sucker for roadside goofyness and Stuckeys and stuff like that

I've driven us rte40 a couple of times.....much of what you see in Cars is based on stuff you can still find on that road. Seligman, AZ is a classic spot to seek out.....meteor Crater, etc. great stuff! I bought t-shirts (3 for $10) at some souvenir shops in that area too. :D

Make time in your life to explore that area at least once, you won't regret it. :waytogo:

I know exactly how that feels! My suburban sat for 7-8yrs and I'm planning on driving it to BB14. It definitely adds a level of excitement!

It's just nice to have a reason for it other than just having it. In my case (and maybe yours too?) my dad bought my truck new. Even sat down and picked all the options he wanted and waited for it to be built and delivered. As far back as I can remember I thought it was a super truck. Capable of things no ordinary truck could do. Anyway, I wanted it forever. He hit hard times when I was 17 and gave it to me. The reality is if I had just bought this truck from a random dude when I was 17 sure it would have been sold off years ago. But I love this truck and would never get rid of it. So it's good to have goals for it aside from just letting it sit in my possession.

My dad bought mine when I was about 9yrs old, it had about 20k on it. Gave it to me for my 18th birthday. I had already been driving and wheeling it for 3 years at that point.

That's awesome. I really regret wheeling mine. I wish I just would have gotten it and not ****ed with it. But I was 17 after all... I just remember how incredibly clean and smooth and quiet it was when I first got it. Oh well...
