And so it begins...
On December 12, 2009 I brought home my first car. I was 15 and saved up enough to buy somethin and after a while of searching I found this:*
1971 GMC Jimmy. 350/465/205 with 1/2 tons and 4.10s, auburn in the back and a spooled front. Motor had an edelbrock RPM air gap intake, hooker comp headers, edelbrock 750 cfm carb, K&N air cleaner, full MSD, and hadn't been started in 3 or 4 years
With my dad nearly screaming at me to buy it, I did. Paid a whoppin 1500$ for it. And so it began. Rebuilt the carb and stole some hood hinges off a donor truck, did a few minor things and got it ready for me to drive. I got my license in march and here's it on the first day I drove it to shool:
First one of my buddies to get something other than a car so of course we had to hit the mud ruts behind the school. Well it wasn't long before I got pedal happy and attempted to burn out....*
And after some crapped pants and a drive home in one wheel drive (can't turn for crap with both hubs locked on a spool) I crawled underneath to assess the damage...*
I had smashed the spring perches and messed up the yoke beyond repair. So I had to pull the rear end out and I had a friend weld new perches for me (very talented welder) and before I knew it, it was back on the road. And soon my high school car show came up, decided I needed to paint it. So I went to my dads buddy who was a distributor and bought 28 cans of Chevrolet orange engine paint. I still have to argue that it is orange not red.
Well I kept it that way for a while and started building a bumper for it at school. I started with 10 feet of 4"x8" tubing that is 1/4 thick (little bit heavy but hey I'm a kid) and that took forever cause I had to work at school on it. So I finally got it over with and also found some really small clevises to put on it...
After that I rounded up some paint and threw the hard top back on because it was rainy season. I don't have a pic of when it first went on but I'm sure a pic will come up. A blown coil then caused the truck to be down for a month because i could not figure out what was wrong. Then my dad bypassed the amp box so the MSD was disconnected. He was weary about the coil. Even though we put an MSD coil in it. At some point I got ahold of some canvas material and put together a bikini top and slapped a 30$ radio in it.*
It stayed that way for a few months due to my lack of funds. But finally decent grades paid off. My dad said he would help put 150 to some tires since mine were past the wear bars. And after a little searching I found a guy selling some wheels and he didn't really care about the tires. I ended up getting 4 Baja claws for 200$! And they are 35's with 85% tread! Those went right onto my aluminum wheels I painted black and balanced them with some airsoft bbs.*
Then I decided I wanted to carry a spare. I began fabbing a tire carrier to add onto my bumper. I bought 20' of 2x3 with a 1/8 wall. After I got it all put together I decided to revamp my bumper
And that's kinda where I am now. I don't have a whole lot of time for the truck between school (im a senior in high school) and the girlfriend (see her everyday and damn happy about it) I've finished the tire carrier and it's on there. I currently have a push bar that's almost done and ready and I just got some KC's for my Bday to put on it. At some point right after I painted it I pulled the body lift. And after I started making the tire carrier I repainted it. *Right after I repainted it I replaced the clutch. And I've got a second set of doors I'm in the process of cutting up for half doors. Heres some random other pics of its life:
So here goes my really slow build thread.*
