My new to me stock 1972 K5 Blazer 350/Auto 4X4

I have been a fan of the full convertible models for a long time and after selling my 1977 FJ40 two weeks ago I decided this is what I wanted for my next toy.
I was real close to buying a clean 73 K5 in Houston that I love the looks of but friends have talked me into the older years.
Do most here think there is an advantage to the 69-72 over the 73-75 years in collectibility, looks or quality of the design and build?

I have just bought a 1972 K5 4x4 350 with auto air and lots of options it is super clean all original except for a clean near perfect repaint job to the original bronze color. It isn't what I really thought I would be buying but it is so clean and a good deal I am going to jumped on it.
I might still look for a project K5 in the 1969-1975 year range but this will give me something clean fun and different to drive in the time it takes to make a project K5 come together. This K5 is so original I would feel bad doing to much custom work or changes to it.
I really figured I would get something I could do whatever I wanted to without regret about lowering future value and collectibility. The only thing I know I want to do right off is tires and wheels something clean and simple with tall skinny light off road tires like my granddad would have put on this if it was his hunting truck. It has a bone stock AM radio and I will want to put something in that gets good FM/AM reception and the ability to listen to music on my phone with a small amp and a few speakers. If it wont hurt the resale collectible value I want to add a roll cage but need opinions from the experts on that. I assume there are areas here that give suggestions as to good ideas for such things. It will be a challenge to not do more then I should to this as my nature is to over do most things.
Anyway any guidance from the members here would be appreciated. I have a few pictures I will post here soon.
If any one knows of a clean project K5 from the full convertible years that is available please let me know. I am thinking Gen 2 since it appears most think they are less collectible but that may be BS.

That is a rare and highly desireable K5!..they didn't make many in the CST trim package ,and its even rarer to find one that's not rusted at least a little somewhere ..even in desert climates..


I think the 69-72 K5's were the best looking and were built better than the later versions,and retain much more of their value..

I had 2 K5's of similar vintage,a '71 CST and a '72 K5..on the '72 I put a set of stock 6 lug 16.5" rims with 8.75x16.5" Cooper Discoverer tires,that were tall and skinny,"pizza cutters",and they had the old "snow tire" tread pattern that was popular in the 60's and 70's..thing looked mean,and would go thru deep snow like it was nothing with those tires..

You could retain the oem AM radio and add an FM converter to it,to avoid detracting from its originality...or hide a newer radio/cd player in the glove box or console maybe..

Where can I get a set of stock chrome style rally wheels for this?
I have seen some from a few google searches but I dont know what is correct for this really. Thanks PG

Rally wheels never came on that year...not saying about a million guys haven't put them on.

Personally I would stick with the stockish look for that truck and keep the hub caps. Although I would try to find some 15x8 cucv wheels instead of the 15x6.5s
 
I wont get rid of the originals but do want to put something without hub caps on it. Anyone have any Rally Wheels for sale? Thanks PG
 
I agree, much to clean to mess with.

As much as this hurts me to say, I'll say it anyway: PLEASE KEEP IT STOCK.

Now......the way I really feel: Lift that f#cker 6", Dana 60, 14bff, lockers, 38" tires, the works. That would also look awesome.:whistle:
 
It looks perfect to me just like it is...just be aware that anything you do to it non-stock will harm the value. You can insure it very easily and cheaply with Hagerty as it sits
 
Ok got it back from my mechanic for a check up.
It will need an AC compressor and hoses.
It has some oil and transmission leaks but
they thought I should drive ti a few weeks to see if they stop since
they are minor and it was sitting for 3-5 years.
I do need some interior trim items who should I look to for those?
Who sells stock looking rally style wheels also?

Great rig. Yep leave that one close to stock. Lots of good info here from peeps that have spent years and lots of moolah on upgrades and fixes. Use that knowledge and experience to make you rig better.
 
Ebay and CList are great resources for NOS trim parts, if you want to go that route. Otherwise there are tons of aftermarket support for these. Brothers, LMC, GMC Pauls, Mar-K, Classic Industries, Classic Part, etc etc.

Agree, if you change the wheels and tires you need to store the originals somewhere. They should stay with the blazer. In my C10 build thread, a couple of the companies making new Rally wheels are mentioned. I don't remember the names but they are in the first 10 pages I believe. You can get them in larger diameters and colors. There are also several members here that have gotten custom Rally wheels made that still accept the hub caps. Your other choice is to find some off CList and have them chromed.

Check out the aftermarket radios that fit in the factory holes. You get AM/FM, AUX, and some other outputs. A lot of guys are running these for the same reason you will be. Like mentioned, you can leave the factory one in it's place and run an aftermarket one in the center console, glove box, or under the seat with a remote. Just don't EVER cut the dash lol

It wasnt for sale but since we are friends he let me have it at his cost.
I paid 17k but have put 3-4k into it getting the bugs worked out adding tires and a stereo. Real happy with it except its rained almost every day since I got it going. PG

You are right close to the same $$ I have in mine and you didn't have to do all that work....so I see this as a case and point....IF somebody really, really wants a "stock" blazer 1st or 2nd Gen, the money is well spent up front to get a clean one IF you don't have the means or the want to restore it yourself. If I had the hots for a 1st Gen I would have paid 17K for that one....Blue Book puts them at $22K in that condition, so the bank would certainly make the loan. :waytogo:
