My old man hotrod/dd

So I have been working on getting this so I can drive it to work. Finally am getting the idle and carb lined out. I am running 14.7-15.5 now with a 72 jet and 47p rod. I ordered 71 jets to try and push it into the 16s at high vac cruising.

The converter is pretty soggy but I am waiting till after the gear change and posi. My buddy owns a local machine shop that is expanding to do more mechanical/restoration stuff on the side is installing the gears for me. He was looking at Marty's used 3.23s and found a big chip I missed so now it is getting new 3.42s instead. Probably will be hardly noticeable from the 3.23s I planned on. Also found this odd thing when they disassembled the rear axle. Can anyone tell me what is odd about this axle?

That is some kind of axle saver bearing set up, the original bearing is pressed into the axle tube and the inner "race" is actually the axle surface itself. Once the axle surface is scored beyond salvage these bearings are installed to use a section of axle surface not damaged by the original bearing.

Nope it is not. This has a O style housing that retains the axles like a 9". The end of the axle doesn't even have a c-clip groove. My brothers 71 cutlass has a similar 8.5 to this. Supposedly some wagons and elcaminos have these. Mine must be a rare COPO 74 Malibu sedan.

I had not seen one in a Malibu coupe or sedan, I thought the sole domain of that rear was the Buick,Olds, Pontiac.

I actually decoded the axle and it says it was built by Oldsmobile but it only had 26k so I think it is original.
