My quest for quiet, free flowing mufflers

I don't agree that you can label ALL turbo mufflers are bad. Just look at the chart I posted last night. The Super Turbo is killing others that are open style like the Borla. If you have a dyno or any test on one, then it needs to be named on which brand since some are shit, some are not. I seen a test where the flowmaster was crap on a dyno but I think that was a turbo car. It lost lots of HP. But I'm not going to say all flowmasters are bad. There's not enough proven data sometimes.

And I do like the info you get from Engine Masters. That show is awesome. Makes me want to run a salad bowl as my air cleaner! :D Not sure if thats the show you are referring to but they did some muffler testing. The results I saw where very slim between them.

Ok. It was Engine Masters and they were testing generic straight through and turbo mufflers just to see if there was a difference.

Back when I was WAY younger and stupid.... I thought I'd start to modify the K5 (it was mostly stock). I thought it would be TOTALLY cool to make it louder. I can't remember if it was the cat or muffler but I cut it out and installed some 3" flexible dryer ducting from Home Depot. I thought to myself.... "man this thing will sound wicked"! Anyway on my first test drive, the heat expanded the dryer duct material to the point that it made it full loop under the K5 and started dragging on the ground. That was a total red-neck exhaust fail! :D

Here's another old test I found. I like seeing the decibel measurments.

Is spin tech even still a thing?
Yeah. They have been bought out a few times but they are still out there. I want to put a set of spin techs on my caddy, I think it would sound wicked.

Have you heard the black widow mufflers? Heard a 6L GMC with some and it didn’t suck

Only problem with the black widow is they are kind proud of their product. Personally once I'm over 100 per muffler I start getting stingy. Lots of good flowing muffers on the market for 100 or less.
So when I look at a 130 dollar plus muffler. I just wonder .......why?

I was thinking that with the Flowmaster 50 big block mufflers that were $200 each and not even stainless. Man they are proud of those! Speaking of which, those 50 series big block won't work for me. They don't have the correct center\offset I need in 3" size. Only the 70 series would work. Those are $175 each.

Something I found on the Dynomax Super Turbos with the center/offiset configuration. I was worried about the flow over the center pipe. But... if you do the math, its not bad.

The larger/longer 3" body ( ex #17769) Dynomax ST ohas a taller and wider case and actually has eqaul to or slightly MORE cross sectional/flow area around the top and bottom [roughly 2X(3 1/2 x 1 1/4) or 8.75 sq in vs 7.068 sq in for a 3" pipe) of the center tube than the cross section of the pipe ID itself . That should still flow pretty good. The picture I posted is a 2.5" muffler which does not have that space for flow.

Also a 20" ST case Super Turbo has 3 x 14" or 42" of baffled tubing compared to about 22" in an Ultraflow or Magnaflow.

I dont know if it's been covered, but when it comes to the quiet part, the length of the tailpipe will help a lot.

I keep telling my wife I want to put a Black Widow Neighbor Hater muffler on the C10. She doesn't find the idea as amusing as I do. :rotfl:

You guys are amateurs. If you REALLY want your neighbors to hate you....

One day they came over bitching after I fired up the Evo and showed some people the 2 step launch, 25 lbs of boost and back firing louder than M80's going off. :D
