My quest for quiet, free flowing mufflers

Agree. But it sounds like he tired of loud and maybe is willing to give a little for a reduced sound level?

I can understand getting it quite at idle and cruise, but trying to make it quite at WOT is likely not going to happen unless the muffler size gets up to huge x ginormous.

I'd hate to impede exhaust flow. I was hesitant to install these turbo mufflers for that reason. The Walker quiet flow mufflers are another option and are a little restrictive but didn't have the size and offset I needed.

When I think high performance muffler, the name walker would be the farthest from my mind.

A resonator is what usually quiets exhaust tones the most at open throttle..
I removed one from the Ford Contour I had ,located at the tail end of the car, when it rusted thru, and put a pipe in place of it...it then had a very raspy bark if you wound it up thru the gears, previously it was practically silent..

But when you think "quiet", aftermarket performance mufflers are the last thing you'd think of. That's why I was suggesting a stock muffler from something bigger. Even if a 3" (or bigger) muffler is a little restrictive, using each one on only 4 cylinders makes that much less of a factor. But the big stuff is hard to find in all stainless

Also true. But I would never make that connection because quiet is something that I'm never looking for.
When I am putting mufflers on some thing this is the reaction I'm looks for.

I was thinking of putting the Dynomax race bullets on mine. Cuz same

Shawn, buy race radios headset with the ear muffs built in

I'm telling you, those big block series 50 Flowmasters are quiet. Huge, but quiet.

@mrk5
They don't have the correct offset and size I needed. 3" Center in, 3" offset out. I'd have to re-do the stainless exhaust piping and was looking for something with the same size and offset as what I had originally to keep the costs down. If I had to do the entire exhaust over again, it would be a different configuration.

Reconfigure the muffler itself.

Cut off the end and move the offset.

For now, I'm done throwing money and time at this minor issue. Its going to stay loud until another time. Have to address some other things like suspension, axle locations, leaks, wiring, windshield, tires, etc. Appreciate all the advice! At least we have some decent data for flow, sound levels, etc.

Maybe add a set if race bullets before or after the muffs?

I've done that before to act as a resonator. It worked some. Didn't make it quieter but it didn't drone or rasp.

Ever run those? They advertise a “4dB drop over open exhaust”
:haha:

I had them on the k5. It was loud AF

I run them on my k5 now. True duals with long tubes and an h-pipe. Sounds like America.

I have the dynomax super turbos on my chevy with dual 2.5 's and a crossover pipe. (300hp 350.crate motor) Its got a few feet after the muffler then dumps past the axle. I forgot to mention full length hooker headers. Im happy with it. It doesn't piss of the neighbors at 4am when i fire it up to go to work either. I know I'm loosing a touch of power (watch engine masters its not that much) but its nice to be able to have a conversation in the cab while on the freeway.

My 2cents.

Sometimes I wish I went with 2.5" just to control the noise better.

So here's some things that WILL help quiet any exhaust

Smaller diameter piping (2.5" dual, 3" single)
Single exhaust 3", maybe 4" but it will get louder in size.
H pipe / X pipe
Long mufflers, the longer the better
Inserts (this will hurt flow)
Catalytic converters (hurts flow some, gets very hot)
Resonators (does not hurt flow)
Remote mufflers (has valve inside that directs flow)
Quiet mufflers (low DB) on lists mentioned here

Speaking of remote mufflers, this is probably the next best thing. On a switch you can close them to be quiet, and open them for performance. When closed they are restrictive but very quiet. I have ran these with success on other cars. They are pricey though ($270 each). This might be my next muffler down the road.

Here they are on a V8 Holden
