My Re-Re Build Thread.....Drivetrain parts!!

Well finally laid down some paint. Shot the roof and B pillars of the cab in gray. Should be getting some pics of that up in a few days. Right now I am prepping the fiberglass top for paint. As I said in a previous post I am doing both the top of the cab and the fiberglass top the same color to give the illusion of a full top. The rest will be blue.

Yeah making progress, slowly but steadily. Not striving for perfection, but I at least want it to look decent. Every time I turn around I find another flaw that I have missed. Grrr!!

Thanks Jason. Just hope I do a decent job on the outside. Still a little more prep work but it's getting real close. Can't wait to paint the outside so I can put the new weather stripping in that's been sitting in a box for a few months.

Also what do you guys think of this ideal? I plan on painting the topper gray as mentioned before. I have also thought of doing the lower 8-10" of the body in a gray bed liner. I think it would go good with the top and defiantly give it the two tone look. Plus it would serve a purpose in protecting the body from rust and what not.

Heres a pic of my bros old blazer the po had done the bottom area like your taking about I think it was line-X it was pretty nice.

C'mon.....get out the :hack::grind::weld:and go full vert :D , it's not that bad to do . :D :D

Good to hear you're making progress, I can't wait to get to the paint stage with mine .

I say go for the bedliner lower, I have been considering the same for mine, after all I already bedlinered the whole underside, and will be doing the interior so what's a little more :dunno:.

To tell you the truth I have never had a full vert, so I really don't miss it. If that makes sense. Besides trying to find one rust free around here is pretty much impossible. Sure it's California, but it's not the desert either. Here on the North Coast dense fog and heavy rainfall coming right off the ocean wreak havoc on old sheet metal. Nothing like what goes on in the Northern Midwest, but it sure isn't an ideal location for older rigs.

Painted the fiberglass topper today to match the top of the cab. After all the clean up it was to late for pics. I'll get some up tomorrow. Then it's on to finishing up the rest of the body to get it ready for the blue paint.

Is this still that Duplicolor stuff Corey? The cab stuff you just did looks really good!

I need to get off my ass and work on my 90 again soon.

No I did a little more research and figured out that stuff is pretty much crap. I'll leave it for the inside though. For the exterior I am using Matrix. It's a very simple to use single stage system, with a mixing ratio of 4:1:1. Nice thing is it has the clear already in it and sprays VERY easy. I shot the top with an old gun I got. I did stop off at the paint store this morning though and they had a pretty nice gravity feed gun for $89 that I think I'll get in the morning for when I spray the blue.

Right now for a basic paint job Rene I would recommend the Matrix.

Do you have a link? i've had Ryoken and vtblazer both beat me about the head telling me how much better and easier base clear is over single stage. Then I saw your pics of the dash and stuff and wavered. Almost picked up some Duplicolor paint myself a few times...

Wow, looks like it's coming along nicely. My K5's stock paint job had the same paint scheme, white top with the roof also white.

Those guys are probably right. However for a novices like myself and I would assume you as well, I think the single stage is the way to go. Lets face it were not pros, so for me the less steps the better. As well as less chance of screw ups. I'm not doing a show rig, I just want a paint job.

Here is the completed top. Fock, finally. :doah:

Glad that stage is done. Now I just needs to finish up a few things on the lower part and shoot the blue paint. God I will be glad when it's done!!

Nice. I'm headed that way with my full of my 73 k5. Good luck. You're on your way.

thats looking good Corey....got a timeline on the sheet metal?

Crap I don't know. Hoping and that's a big hope to have the body work wrapped up next week. Following week I'll be busy with Bluechic's 20th reunion. Then after that it all depends on the weather and what ever life throws my way. Not gonna get my self to hyped though, cause after the paint job is done the interior is getting a complete revamp. That means seats are getting recovered, new carpet, stereo, headliner, door panels, dash pad, gauge cluster, gauges, seat belts, visors and what ever odds and ends I can think of. After that there is a 6.5TD/NV4500 swap and complete suspension revamp as well to be done. Hoping to have it all done before I meet my maker. :rotfl:

thats pretty quick on the paint...good luck man. Sounds like a lot of goodies, and work to be done.
Good luck man.

Update for this week......

Pulled the top back off, and out of the way. Cleaned up/stripped the top of the bed rails and got them all primed. Now it's just chasing the flaws that I have over looked before the paint goes on. Frustrating to say the least.
