I went out to the dunes today (for my first time) with a fellow CK5er(bucksntrucks969), and was having a great time playing around. I got stuck on a slight hill, and in the process of trying to get unstuck I blew up something in the front axle. It made a pretty nasty noise, but now the front wheels don't do anything. I have no FWD when in 4hi, or 4lo, and the front DS is spinning. As I was trying to climb out, Rick said that the front left tire would rotate a little bit on occasion, but still pretty seldomly. It's an open D44, so if just 1 of the shafts or hubs blew up then I'd have no FWD at all, correct? I'm pretty far out there, and happened to be in a spot where 2WD would not get me anywhere. We drove around looking for anything flat that I could limp through and there was nothing. The CK5er with me has a diesel K5, and he doesn't think it has the power to get tow me along while I follow in 2WD. It couldn't be in a worse spot. I'm not sure what's broken. Everything on the outside looked OK.

So, my Sub is sitting out there overnight, and possibly for a few more days. I really don't want to try and fix what is wrong with it(I'm not even sure what it is). I'm thinking someone with a badass rig can get me outta there, then I can take it apart in my driveway. It's a good 20 miles from my house, and depending on multiple trips from a friend that can even get me out to my Sub is a major problem. Let alone actually fixing the problem and getting the right parts. Man, this sucks!

Where are you standed out there? Could you at least make to Comp Hill?

I sure hope your rig survives the thieves that are out there. Not many rigs that get left overnight are seen in one piece again. Your buddies diesel rig should surely pull it to safety. Get anyone to help you get it off the dunes and at least back on the streets.

X2, i'd try it with the diesel K5 at least before even thinking of giving up...

I had to leave my K5 overnight at BB '03 (1/4 mile from the entrance to Upper Hell in a dried up creek bed) It was by far the suckiest night I've spent in a long time. I didn't get more than 2 hours sleep.

I'm not sure where comp hill is in relation to where I am. As I said, I've never been out there before. It is pretty deep into the dunes area though, that's for sure.

On this map, I wanna say it's above sign 19 and left of Boy Scout Camp, but I really an not sure. All around are pretty steep hills. We went exploring for a decent escape route and really couldn't find anything. It was really the worst possible spot to break something. You guys are making me nervous about coming back and finding it stripped down.:(

Hmm, If you say that you are back there, then yeah, you are in a tight spot. What are you doing tomorrow?

I work M-F in SM from about 8-5. I'm tentatively planning to have 2 buddies help me out of there on Tuesday around 5ish. One has a 2004 Titan with the V8, 4WD, and tow package. Rick, the CK5er I was with today was planning to head out there as well. But, if you're willing to help in any way tomorrow I may be able to get around my work schedule for a couple hours.

I feel for ya man. Ricks gotta a new tranny in his rig, give it the true test.
I hope your home safe and soon:waytogo:!!!

Also, beware of us Puyallup, Wa guys... we can get ourselves in some pretty tight places:eek1:.

Best of luck:D.

Damn, both me and my bother works nights. He got to get to work at 2:15 while I'm taking off at 2:40 to get to Buellton.

this is particularly true if your axles are open - which you say they are. do you know if you have external or internal hubs? the external hubs are sort of conical shaped, like mine:

these have major problems with the 6 bolts loosening up, and then you can either have them fall out or htey will shear off. this happened to me at the bottom of a snowy hill this winter, about 6 hrs into the trail... at 8pm. fortunately i had spare bolts. if they shear off, you can usually get a small screw driver and spin out the remaining studs. these are 3/8" coarse - about 1" to 1.5"... can't remember for sure. anyway, bring some grade 8 bolts with ya! and some locktite. you'll also want to bring some snap ring pliers. really, to replace these bolts, it's very easy. use an allen wrench to remove the cover on the lock out, then remove the snap ring, then any remaining bolts holding it to the hub and pull it off. remove remaining studs, replace bolts. :) it's a greasy job tho.

that is called the internal style. the ones i pictured are external. yes, they are on the outside of your truck, but the name refers to something else... which i don't know exactly. i asked a while back, but forgot the answer. :D

it's probably because you insert yours into the hub, where as on mine, they are bolted to the hub and thus everything is external of the hub itself - as opposed to yours where a good portion of them is internally mounted in the hub.

both of those pictured are internal hubs. see how on the ones i pictured, there's a flange with 6 bolt holes? (you can't see all the bolt holes in the pic, obviously). this is in addition to the 6 allen bolts which are on pretty much all lockouts.

The one he said he has is also external. The external refers to the 6 large 3/8" bolts that hold the locking hub to the wheel hub.

Besides the hubs.
By your description it sounds like you may have blown your spyder gears. When you get back to your truck pull the cover off the diff and check it out. It only takes a few minutes. Dont move your truck untill you at least inspect it. Spyder gears are easy install and only about 40.00. If you move it with shattered spyder gears floating around in it. A piece will get caught between the ring and pinnion and take those out too.
I know you can lock out the front axle. But it only takes a few to scoop out the broke parts just to be on the safe side.

i wouldnt leave my truck alone anywhere! id sleep in it, and call the boss "i cant make it in" good luck man, i hope your burbs ok! it was amazing out there though! cant wait to go back... o ya, i think either you broke an axle or stripped your gears, maybe chewed up a hub.when you go back, have someone give it gas, and see if the front axle shafts are spinning with no tire moving then the hub is shot. if the axles dont move then something in your diff isnt too happy or you broke an axle farther up in the axle tube.

I wouldn't leave my rig alone either . Always best to wheel with a couple spare items and some recovery gear . Take it as a learning experience , and start saving up for a winch and some spare parts . Spiders , hubs , and a couple axles don't take up much room at all .

I just talked to the only tow company that's allowed to go out there. Based on where I told them I was, they said it would be $500 minimum. Phuck!

There's gotta be somebody around that can help me get over some of the hills and limp out in 2WD.
