My Sub is stranded in the dunes!

It does have chromoly axle shafts that are < 2 years old and haven't seen much off-roading. The only part of the axles that haven't been rebuilt is the hubs. Spider gears, eh? I've got a Chilton's and a Haynes manual, time to dig into them I guess. The PO(who did all the mods to it) thought the D44 and 14BFF were from a 87, but it the front does have the large, external style spicer hubs, which I think ended in 76 or 77.

tow truckers will rip you off because they got you by the balls and they know it. i definitely would not leave the rig out there for 1 night let alone 2 or 3 days. im sure somebody in CA on here tahts not far from you can help you out.

ud be surprised, id be willing to bet that the diesel k5 in 4lo would be able to pull you when ur in 2wd. he might have to yank you to get you out of the initial stuck spot, but it shouldnt be to bad after that. id definitely exhaust that idea before leaving the rig there. good luck man i hope it gets out with no theft.

On that map, I'm straight back from the #21, for those that know the area.

Rick thinks that a kinetic tow strap will really help us pull my Sub out. Any experience with these?

Also, suppose it is a spider gear that is broken. As long as I have the hubs unlocked, and the 241 in 2WD, then it should drive OK, right? None of the front diff parts move at all as long as the front driveshaft isn't turning, and the hubs are free, right?

where is this at im in la area me and my buddy can make a trip to get you out either a k20 and a blazer or my sub also let me know i would be sleeping in it if it where mine. you are at pismo right gas aint cheep though but let me know we can help out if ya help with the gas.

Last year I was crossing a creek in Solvang near the Flying Flags Campground and got stuck overnight. I called every tow company in the area and one guy came down from Pismo and got me out. The company quoted $450 but the driver took care of me for $200 cash. I wish I could think of the company and the driver, I know I have his card at home.

Wow, that suxs. I'd be sleeping in the rig and taking a day off work tho. I had to sleep in my rig before. Half way thru the night we had a bunch of visitors stop by to see. Boy they were scared when the K5 came to life. On another note, with a quick yank and a long enough strap you should be able to be towed out. Once you get moving the strap will only be tight and the other rig wont really be towing until you bog down. Good luck man.

I made some calls and got a ok from others let me know.
also i dont see why you cant drive it out of there i go everywhere in my sub in mostly 2 wheel in glamis and pismo is easy compared to glamis.
trick to pismo is go away from the beach turn right at the fence and follow it all the way out no big dunes that way and easy to find truck i bet you you could drive it out.
I know there are a couple of companys with h1 out there that do tours and have seen them pull people out before might try them, or drive up and down the beach looking for a big truck.
the kenitic ropes are the best hands down and what we have we buy it locally or you can get it from a ship yard supply place by the foot runs about 4 dollars a foot 2 seems to work the best if i am remembering right.I t is easier on drive train and trucks it streches in stead of just stoping you.

I've driven all over those dunes and they are small compared to others like Glamis. That being said a diesel in 4 low with decent tires and you being in 2 high with decent tires, all of you aired down to 10ish pounds and a good tow strap will get you out. Now I say that with my experiance in trucks in the dunes, hope you and he have enough experiance to do the same.

When I lived there the towing company was drug infested so you just told the wrong people where your truck is.

If one wheel is given a bit of a wiggle then I would guess a blown hub. It sounds like what mine did when it broke.

Now that a tow company knows there is a stuck/broken rig out there, I would camp out with it until you can get it out. You never know who they will tell.

Good luck!
I wheeled there many a time when going to shcool there. You are in a tough spot. I know the dunes change every year but where you are and what you are describing means that another rig will have to tow you up at lest one hillclimb to get out. That will be tough no matter what your being dragged by. Those burbs are not light and neither is a diesel K5.
I have had pretty good luck out there in 2wd, but only when running single digit tire pressures in a 5000 lb K5. I had real goot tracktion at 6psi but usually ran 8psi. Never lost a bead at 8, but never turned hard either.
Good luck!
Sorry cant be of more help but dont know anyone down there anymore who had a rig.

i would assume that if the state park rangers find it they will tow it out and impound at your expense too specailly if its there for along period of time.

Maybe pick up a come-a-long before you head out, if nothing else he could atleast anchor for you. It'll be a tedious work out, but better then stuck.:dunno:

Feel free to give me a call if you dont have it out yet, I live in Buellton and have a lifted Diesel 4x4 F350 crewcab that would probably do the job. My name is Ira and my number is 805-689-5623. I have been stuck out there a few times and I know how much it sucks.

You should try to get ahold of Tori (tori89k5) or Brian (SLOK5) as they both lives a few minutes from the dunes there. I'm not sure if Tori checks here very often anymore but i think Brian still does on occasion.
