NAPA, I am disappoint.

I don't think the pack is that good this year.
Where do you place your bets at?

For example, here's one ticket still alive. I need Denver +5, and SEA/BUF over 39. Slim chance, but we'll see.

Every time I am in Vegas I toss money at some sports.
I don't care for any other gambling, but sports betting gets me.... Glad I don't live there

I don't go too crazy, and as I said, I'm running even, so, so far it's free entertainment.

One of my favorite things is going to the sportsbook on saturday, get out all my notes and stuff, watch college football on the big screens while I make my NFL picks. It's a great getaway for me.

Stupid thing is, I went home, typed in the info on my truck, and up pops the correct one. I wrote it down, handed it to the guy at NAPA, and he went and got it.

Why couldn't they have done that?

Its called "NAPA Know How" :D

Good one!..Ba-ZING...

And I'm a former parts counterman too...:ignore:

I was often blamed for looking up the wrong parts, but most of the time it was the part was boxed wrong--box had the right number, but not
that" part in it..

We had a picture of Rodney Dangerfield on the parts counter with the caption "Parts men get NO respect" !..

I've bought a whole lot of parts from countermen who didn't have much understanding of what they were selling. And very rarely have I encountered someone with your level of parts knowledge behind the counter. Most underpaid clerks are just clerking, not providing useful input. I think there's a reason that Rockauto has done so well. If I'm going to be doing the lookup knowledge anyway, why bother paying the retail markup price? :dunno:

I'd be more inclined to support the local stores if they had a better track record of helping me out when I needed answers.

The auto parts sales world changed dramatically since I was employed as a counterman--back then we were told to "not let a paying customer leave empty handed"--even if it meant calling several warehouses to see if the part they needed was available,etc...

Only one store I worked at ever offered any "bonus" for going the extra mile to "special order" something..(I'd get .50 per sale provided I filled an order form out "completely"--if they found one thing omitted, they wouldn't pay up--and often I'd wait months before they added up my slips --in the end I didn't feel it was worth the hassles)..

Some of my bosses frowned up selling parts to guys like "us" who are assembling several different years of parts together in one vehicle, which often led to "wrong" parts being returned in torn greased up boxes,or with gasket sealer on them ,etc--caused a lot of strife and tension between management and employees and customers..but for the most part we were expected to bend over backwards to find hard to get parts..

Today if the "computer has no listing" all you get is a blank stare, they wont go any further, like it is illegal for them to sell a part without an "application" for fear of lawsuits or liability..
Back in my day we used to have to do forensic exams on old U-joints,look them up by size listings in the back of catalogs (most stores now haven't seen a catalog in 15+ years, everything is computer or nothing)..scrape casting numbers off engines to find out just what Goober installed for an engine when the "right" parts didn't fit, ditto for carb kits..we had to earn that 8 bucks an hour!..

We also had to learn to use a computer in the 80's,it was not an easy transition for someone who used paper, pen, and catalogs for decades--and many of us felt that was going to be the "end" of traditional parts jobber stores, and its come to fruition, all the counter persons now for the most part are not gear heads or vocationally trained, have not so much mechanical inclination...they just push buttons and the computer looks the part up,and they ring up a sale..just like any other store..

This is why you always read online to "head for the oldest parts store in town, and find the guy with the gray beard and missing teeth" when you have a "hard part to find".....

I remember when I first applied for a counter job back in the late '80s. We had about a half dozen questions on the application, then before we could get an interview there was a 100 question test. Of course, you had to give your app to one of the actual counter men when you applied. A lot of applications never even made it to the boss.

Then again, most of the stores like that are long gone. Even though people say they want service, they usually are not willing to pay for it.

I have to say the NAPA that we use at the shop is top notch. They have a couple of older dudes and one gal that know their stuff. There are a couple of other counter guys that can't find their own ass with a map and a flashlight though. I've had to fill in for our parts manager and when I do I know who to ask for when I call.

Since I've done some time behind the counter you would be amazed what people come in and ask for at the dealer when the local part store said it was a "dealer only" type part. I've had people coming in looking for something for a car that hasn't been built for 25 years or better. Then when I find the part, but find out the part has been long discontinued I'm the bad guy. Hell I've had to break out the old books from time to time to get a lead on something. I'm one of two people in the building that even know how to find stuff in the books. The other is my warranty admin since she started out in parts many moons ago, My parts manager is too young to "get it". He tends to lean on my experience when somebody tries to play "stump the chump" with something old.

That being said, I tend to shy away from the retail chain stores for anything more than fluids/filters. If I need parts I'll order them when I'm at work and buy at jobber price plus tax rather than retail.

Had a similar experience today, trying to get some U-bolts to reinstall my rear axle, called 4 different parts stores that I knew for sure sold "universal" U-bolts because I had seen them in the store before. Just wanted to verify that they had the size and width that I needed, well not one person that I spoke with knew what a U-bolt was and told me they either had none or they tried to sell me U-joint straps. I ended up hanging up with the last store after being on hold for 10 minutes while the guy checked his "system" and just drove to the store, there the U-bolts were, right at the front of the store, when I checked out the guy was like, "hey didn't you call earlier, it was like the line went dead"... Talk about air headed folks.
Yeah, but they wouldn't have hired me because I'm too old....Too old for what?
