Need advice

Can anyone link me to a complete set of everything I need to re-gear the Axle's? I want to see a total price of parts only for the front and rear axles.
Parts only will be between $650 and $1000 depending on brand and options.

Other guys on this site can probably speak to this better than me but I'd guess about 1000 or so for all new parts, with swapping an open carrier in to get rid of the Gov loc

post up some pics of the steering box, steering arm and drag link when you can. Check the bolts where the steering box bolts to the frame. make sure they are tight. look at the frame around those bolt holes and see if there are any cracks. Have a friend turn the steering wheel with the truck running while you look at the steering box to see if it moves or flexes at all. Thats the first stuff to check out and make sure is ok...Then we can go on from there

I was also thinking about caster changes from the lift, that will make it wander.

Thanks! I will have to google that stuff and find diagrams or pictures. Not very familiar with the steering system.

So open carrier is an additional cost?

Still going to hunt between gears. That burns a transmission up fast.

So I plan to upgrade to 4:56 and install a lockup harness so my vehicle can shift to overdrive. Are you saying that with big tires and 4:56, and a lockup harness for OD, I will still smoke the tranny?

Not every one does. If you understand how they work and watch the transmission temperature, you would be ok. When people just drive them without paying attention, letting it shift constantly, it becomes an issue. Heat is the biggest killer of automatics of any kind.

So the lockup harness will cause it to shift into OD on it's own. How do I control the OD shifting then?

I was told I need the lockup harness so I can improve fuel consumption and extend my transmission life. Won't run as hot. Won't ruin the fluid.

I guess I am confused. Switching my axel gears from 2:73 to 4:56 and 35 inch tires and a 700R4. Will any of this combination destroy anything on my vehicle? Destroy the axel, transmission, anything?

No. Just be smart about the use. I have had mine like that for 13 years. Daily drove it for 1.5 years. Search and rescue in Baja for 2 years. Wheeling a number of places in the USA for the rest of the time. I am not easy on it.

its prob that..compounded by worn spring bushings and such...but it sucks to chase steering problems only to find out your box was loose or the frame was cracked all along

heres what your steering box looks like Kyle..wanna make sure its bolted tight to the frame, doesnt move when your turning the wheel and theres no cracks around the bolt holes.

next pic is what a legendary cracked frame at the steering box looks like

last pic is the sad face you make when you find said crack in the frame

Ok I am looking at a summer cruising vehicle. Limited seasonal use due to salt on the winter roads. No off-road use. I suppose I can keep the gov lock then.

Thank you for that! I will have a look at the steering box. Will have a buddy turn the wheel and see if it moves at all. Cracks around bolts and cracked frame. The guy I bought it from said there was nothing that could be done. I am sure he didn't check what should have been checked. I am sure I am in for another surprise
