Local guy is selling an 89 chevy standard cab dually. One ton 4x4.

He says it has a dana 60 king pin front and dana 80 rear.

454 BB 400 turbo and np205 transfer case.

Does this all sound correct? It sounds right to me.

I googled the truck and came up with both body styles. round and square. Were both available?

I'm guessing the dana 60 will look like all the other 60's I have seen pictures of. Or do they look different?

Pics would be great. thanks for the help.

The rear will highly likely be D70HD, not a D80, unless someone swapped it in.

D60 front will look like all other GM front D60's.

If it's a single cab regular pickup bed, it should be the "new" body style.

The "old" one would only have been available as a crew cab and/or a cab-and-chassis, i.e. sold without a bed by GM and some aftermarket bed (flat, stake, whatever) bed put on.

If it was a cab-n-chassis, it may have been made with the narrow dually rear, where the outer tires are parallel with the fronts. Generally these would have a GM corporate 14 bolt axle, however.

The VIN would say for sure, so if you can get that you can say for certain.

HTH.

Whoops! Didn't see the "standard cab" as I read thru it too fast.

An '88 with the D60 and "old style" body in the standard cab will be a cab-and-chassis truck, with the wheelbase 4" longer than a standard LWB. The rear axle will be the narrow 14FF, too.

This is my guess and I'm sticking by it.

Yep, if he says it has a D60 front and the 205 t-case, it will be a cab and chassis dually with the 14-bolt narrow rear diff.

GM didn't use the Dana 80 at all until '95 or so in the pickup box duallys.

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure what route I'm gonna go with this truck. Might turn it into what I want instead of the blazer.

Anyway, here it is. Feel free to throw out any info known.

Thanks Bruiser

The front is the famous dana 60. Not sure if the rear is a dana 70 or dana 80. Guy I bought it from said dana 80.

The 454 needs a tune up. It is tbi so no more carb issues on the trailes.:D

I think I'm going to turn this truck into my offroad rig and part out the blazer. The blazer body is a total mess. Plus I won't have to swap 2 drivetrains around in the driveway.

The salt spreader will go up for sale. Or get scrapped out. the very heavy flat bed will also get sold or scrapped out. As will the plow mount on the front.

Let the fun begin!!!!

Wow. Never seen a D70HD on an '88 V3500 because they only came in crew cabs after '87.

Lots of rust under there. Yuck.

Check the RPO sticker in the glove box. It should list the wheelbase length at the upper corner of the sticker. If not, give the first several numbers and letters of the VIN so we can decode it.

Well, for a truck that spent it's life as a plow truck, the cab is in better shape than I thought it would be.

Rust is the Indiana state mineral.

The tag in the glove box reads 131.5" I tried to decode the vin on a couple of different sites and they didn't give me anything I didn't know. Maybe you can find more info. 1GCHV34N6

You sure thats an '89?

Gotta be an '87 instead.

I don't have my book to decode the RPO right away.

Wes we have an 89 V3500 reg cab 4x4 SRW :D. TBI350/TH400/205 with a standard width 14ff. Maybe it's a super rare truck.

This truck shown appears to have an 86 or 87 grille in it .

'85 up to '88 share the same identical grilles. An '89 should be the newer type.

I'm really confused with what GM did to some years of trucks now.

who knows what anyone swapped out and changed. looks like a 87 and up 1-ton long bed truck. doesn't matter what the vin or tags say, it's all there in the pictures.

if ya don't mind, did ya get a real good deal on it?

I think so, paid 1500. I figure the axles and big block are worth that. Sell the salt box and the plow mount and flat bed. Scrap out what I can't sell or use and should about break even.

If I build this truck up to wheel with, that leaves me with 2- 350 motors 3 350th trans and 3- np203 trans cases to sell. As well as a 10 bolt front 12 bolt rear 6 lug, 14ff and a 10 bolt 8 lug. and assorted other parts and pieces.

Now if I could only get all that done before it snows and fit in hunting.

So is does everyone agree its a dana 70? I need to get rear disk brackets.

Thanks, Bruiser

See if the rear cover will fit on the front diff. If so, then D70. Or try looking on the webbing on the diff housing and see if it says 70 on it.
