Need pics-Tire Carrier Bumper

It's the same as any.

I should add that I had a Jeep for a few years since this thread first started and it had an aftermarket bumper on it with a swing away carrier similar the the one shown, I had a 35" TSL and a steel beadlock for a spare. I never drove the jeep on the street it was a trail only rig and evey time I had it out I thought the damn thing was going to fall off:eek1: When I get around to building one for my K5 it will most likely be a drop down version.

I have been contemplating the swing down yesterday/today as it is simpler and stronger. But I don't like the idea that I have to heft the tire down and up every time I want to open the tailgate. To haul big stuff with the tailgate down (lumber) it is theoretically possible to do with the swing out if you can lock it in place. This is hard on the spindle, but I have done it before (is this my problem?). So with either design you are looking at unbolting the carrier and leaving it at home.

When it broke off I didn't even know what happened. I thought it was the cargo in the back shifting around. Somebody behind me was honking and trying to get my attention. I thought maybe the clunk had been his car hitting me. So I got out and looked at his car - I wasn't even afraid for my bumper. "Hey your tire fell off and it's laying in the road". I turned to look and...:eek1::eek1::eek1:

BTW, it's hard to retrace your steps on one-way streets.

The welds on the wheel mounting plate broke and it's still mounted to the wheel. A couple things on the carrier are bent, but all the tubing is fine. There is a stop pin on top of the bumper that keeps the carrier from opening too far. It worked with a 35, but it lets a 37 touch the sheet metal. That pin is really tweaked, but there isn't a mark on the truck, so I don't know what trajectory it took. I'm just glad it didn't go through a window or get lodged underneath a dump truck or kill somebody.

the fact I'll have a 38 up there reinforces that thought to me... easier mounting too...

i agree.
i'm only gonna have a 33 on the back and i need access during the day as its my daily ride, for work too. i'll have things hanging out the back and need to lock the tire to the side with the tailgate down........them 38's gotta weigh a bit too :eek1:

I like how mine is built seems like a good design, however I hate opening it all the time to get into the back but that another story.

No, Blazer Off Road did they are gone now I think, it wouldn't be all that hard to replicate I would do things a little different next time. I do like how the swing attatches and it will swing to either side. If I decided to narrow my rear end its will probably be for sale.

I have a few things planned for my swingdown that I've never seen... first, it'll be a winch bumper.. and i'm also running the stinger BETWEEN the tire and sheetmetal... every one i've seen is sheetmetal/tire/stinger... one of the main reasons for doing this is to alleviate much of the strain it takes to hold that stinger/tire up...

also my stinger "retainers" will be up high, mounting to the corners of my cage...

tho you have to lower it every time, for me, i look at it as a plus... i'm planning a small section of expanded steel on the backside of the stinger.. step for my dinosauric knees.... :doah::haha:

for myself, i'm not concerned about driving with the tailgate down... but i can see how some may want that...

not sure if it will work with my K5 but if it will I'll sit first in line:waytogo: I wanted one from him anyway, he built my front

Maybe a dumb idea but...
If running a cage anyway, why not go through the body to the cage at the back corners? Kinda hard to put into words but, basically have it mount in a similar spot to the factory setup but, reinforced through the body to the cage (the flange on the body could bolt through the body and be sealed). It'd give ya two well spaced pivot points (about a foot of spread so very little leverage put on the hinges). Could rig it to be openable from either side as well. I'll try and make a (admittedly terrible) paint picture to illustrate what I'm talking about, it's probably gonna take me a while though.

I cant find it right now but i saw a thread on www.expeditionportal.com a few days ago. someone used a locking warn hub for the swing out spindle. it even locked open/closed with the original twist lock on the hub. It seems like that would be perfect. A fronthub and spindle can support the weight of the whole truck so it should be more than enoug for a tire and a few jerry cans.

that is a great idea.. where do you get the spindle ? can you buy one or do you have to chop one off a rear?

Thants exactly what I planned on doing as I explained above. I took a hub off a spare 44 I had and machined off the wheel mounting flange, the pinion shown in that thread looks like a reugular old axle pinion.

Her's my swing away, pics are a couple years old,

Here is a sneak peek of my new solution.

Here you can see the machining I did to the hub. I thought leaving those little ears on would make for a stronger weld.

Here you can compare the trailer spindle to the 10-bolt spindle:

are you just going to weld the swing part to the 10 bolt hub housing and use the hub for a lock so it doesnt swing out

Yes. But the hub will not be the only thing preventing it from swinging out - that would probably vibrate and maybe eventually fail. It will really be held shut by a bolt on the far end that tightens the carrier against the bumper.

I you want a quality design and one that can handle abuse contact this fabricator. www.4x4labs.com I have seen great work from this shop. Great quality of work but not cheap and not quick. Primarily focuses on Toyotas but I am sure he has done or will do FSCs.
