Need some 700R4 help...back together post 64!

That spring should be pushed up farther on the valve till the small part of the spring is seated on the back side of the first large land on the valve. It is made to collapse upon itself as the valve strokes, not having it seated this way could cause it to bind up the valve.

I don't see any instructions on the web, but what Greg says here makes sense. Which way was the spring facing when you pulled it out? I think the taper is so the spring doesn't get caught in those grooves. You could do things differently with a stock valve. That looks just like the spring in the Transgo pictures, so they must have a way intended for it.

Looked kinda like:

I > --

"I" being the back of the valvebody, the ">" being the spring direction (big end at end of VB, skinny end on the valve) and "--" is the valve

The spring would catch the back of the valve and keep it from sliding back/forth in the bore...its catching on those small silver lands on the end of the valve.

with that new VB i have, i could pull the OEM valve and use that...or just keep this one. Maybe its time to just install one or the other and give'r a shot!

I couldn't get the spring to catch on the OE valve, so I just left it out and put the OE valve in...though when I put the spring and transgo valve in the other valve body it worked ok, just catching slightly but much better than before.

Initial reports look good...70 psi at idle, when I drop it to manual 1st it jumps to 140.

Tomorrow I plan on getting more pressures and fine tuning the tv cable using my pressure gauge, so hopefully I won't have any more issues.

If you guys have some advice on doing that, I'm all ears and eager to learn :)

At wide open throttle the tv cable should be as tight as it can be without restricting throttle opening or bending the bracket.

So far so good...pressure is good, and I have a new found respect for auto trannys. Pretty cool gadgets I must say.

It's weird, but it shifts much smoother when using manual than letting the trans shift itself, the shift points are definitely different...higher in auto.

Thanks again guys, I owe you beer!

Well glad to hear it, I can always use more wheeling partners and such. Our herd is thinned out pretty thin nowadays. Houses, kids, wives and all that crap did them in. :haha:

bravo! :bow::bow:

thanks for posting your trouble with it, it's a great lesson. I have a tranny I need to "dig into"...it's a rebuild, but I need to check and maybe change some things in it...:doah:

So far so good... Not many miles put on, but I took it out friday before work to the front of the neighborhood and back, about 2-3 miles with a few stop n goes. Works awesome...and the turbo whistling away is pretty sweet too :)

Fwiw, I did the typical tv adjust where you zero it out, hit the button, then WOT. Then checked it withh my pressure gauge...As it turns out needed to adjust the sleeve back a few clicks to get the pressure rise as throttle is increased. But it goes to show that method will get you in the ballpark.
