need some help after replacing pinion seal, re-setup gears?

well ive got the shafts pulled, havent been able to get the carrier out yet, its bein a b!tch. from what i can see, the gears look to be in very good shape no unusual wear and the carrier bearings look really good as well.

i did notice a groove in my passenger side rear rotor, but it looks like its been there a while, so i dont think thats causing the shuddering, or at least making it appear after changing the seal. the rotors/pads have about 1k miles on them. the passenger side is a reman caliper i got from advance auto and its destroying my rotor.

whats the pinion nut supposed to be torqued to? and what are carrier bearing bolts torqued to?

Put a wrench on one of the ring gear bolts then turn the pinion until the wrench hits the housing (turn it the direction that would make the wrench tighten the bolt). It will pop right out.

There is a torque spec if it uses shims. If it uses a crush sleeve then there is no torque spec, you tighten it until the pinion bearing preload is correct. For specs try google or ringpinion.com.

Always good to add tricks to my arsenal. I told him to try a come along if it dont pop out. Only other trick I know without a case spreader lol.

Honestly I don't think this is a gonna turn out to be an issue with your pinion.

The fact that you hit the brakes when it shudders should be a key indicator. hitting the brakes should disengage the transmission and remove the load from the pinion and ring gear it should be coasting at that point.

Take your discs or drums to a napa or some place like that and have them measure the run out. My guess is its going to turn out to be an issue with your brakes.

Huh? Any problem specific with cost side of the gears will come out when coasting or on the brakes...

well i still havent been able to get the carrier out yet, i tried the wrench on the carrier bolts and turning the pinion and all it would do is tighten the carrier bolts. think im gona try a tow strap and see if i can get it out

Be as gentle as you can with a car yanking on carrier lol

Stuff a rag between the ring and pinion gear and then turn the Yoke and it should force the carrier out.

I just don't think its going to cause the truck to shake. Even if said axle has a crush sleeve, preload will have minimal effect on pinion and ring gear pattern as long as it was snug. It will effect the way the bearings wear but wont effect how the gears ride, that will be effected by the shims. Unless you tightened it down so tight you crushed the shims or so loose that is wobling in the race. But as I said if it was snug I just don't see this effecting the truck in a manner that would manifest itself into shaking the truck when you on the brakes. If it were either of said instances it would have manifested when your on the gas as well.

I think this will be a brake related issue.

I agree it takes broken ass gears/blown bearings to make a truck physically shutter.

it doesnt shudder really bad, but its enough to notice. the truck doesnt feel like its going to lose control or anything, i guess it feels kinda like abs, but the truck doesnt have it.

i put a strap around the carrier and tried gently pulling it with my other truck and the carrier still woudnt come out, it budged a little bit but thats it. it got to the point where i was pulling the truck over a 1 foot talk wheel chuck and nothing haha. i cleaned everything out and it all looks good in there. i think the issue might be that the pinion nut wasnt on there tight enough. i think i had it on there at about 150ft/lbs and i checked the d60 bible on pirate and it said 240-300ft/lbs. i just got back from the dealership with a new pinion nut and am gona torque it down and we'll see what happens

I'm assuming that while you're trying to pull the carrier out you do have the axles removed?

haha yea i did have them removed. im torquing the piniono nut down and gona try it again and see how it is. if its still acting up a little im gona take the cover off and put gear paint on it and see what the deal is, and go from there
