New goodies so I can shift better!!

lol, really cheap as in $1700+ and that was only the Level 2 that I was looking at.

I think I'm going to have to stick to a local shop. Thanks for the info.

Yep, thats the reason I got the parts and did it myself:D

hmm, I have never been afraid to do projects but I'm not sure if a tranny is worth paying for the "pros" to do it. Although it's all relative to someone's skills did you think it was that challenging of a project?

I didnt really do it totally by myslef, I had a friend help me who has been building trannys for GM for about 20 years. He basically just told me what to do and I did it. It is a pretty intense job. You have to be very careful that you do everything correct. A simple scrape on a seal can ruin the whole tranny.
But I will tell you this doing it "myself" is soemthing that im glad I did, I now know how the tranny works and I know that there werent any corners cut when putting it together.

So yes go for it, take your time, think of it more as a learning experience rather then a chore.

interesting, I didn't know the Redneck guys came from Carr. Cool beans. I know they sell good stuff cheaper than your average high-perf tranny supply place, thats for sure. I figure the shifter will cost me $200, VB is $225, 34 element sprag is $50ish, rebuild kit is $170 (alto red eagles/kolenes etc). I have both a step-by-step video and a good manual for the th400. I'm gonna try to build it myself. Core cost me $100. End result should be a bad azz offroad trans for about seven-fidy. Not bad.

how hard was it to change the valve body? and should i have the tranny rebuilt when doing that, or just have the filter changed and tranny flushed, i think the trannys doin fine, i hope....also any part numbers on VB and shifter, i also got the 700r4

You can do it while it's still in, my dad did one and said it was pretty easy. Oh and for the filter/flush just do it yourself. I just did it and it was easy as pie, although I did want to shoot whoever didn't put a drain plug in.

It's where you use the engine to brake instead of the actual brakes.

would you recommend this for a DD that will see occasionals trails? worth doing?

Why are you wanting one?? Just for the cool factor??

It gets rid of the TV cable for one. He has had a problem with that in the past too.

I don't know, I've always thought it was a nice addition, gives you more control too but at the same time it's some $$$ and time spent on something that doesn't really need to be done for a dd.

To do a regular shift kit you can have the trans in still, but if you plan on going to a full manual valve body then the trans is going to have to come out. I also have a full manual from redneck performance, I was a little worried when I bought it a few years ago because nobody here (or pirate) knew anything about them but the company was more than willing to stand behind there product. I have to say that I am very happy with it and so far I have had no issues with it. Compression braking is nice, it only brakes in 1st and 2nd. Have to be careful though cause with 5.13's if you hit 1st to soon you will go through the windshield. I put that full manual in a built 400 from jet, between the two I know I wont be having any tranny issues for a long time.

Well, partly for the cool factor, to get rid of the tv cable as avery said, and i think that it would be alot funner to drive the truck, and its the closest i`ll get to a manual tranny...is it required to pull the tranny to put the VB in a 700r4

Can you use a ratchet shifter with a 700r4?

Reason I ask is that i've recently decided to skip all the crap associated with swapping to the 400 i have and just run the 700 until it blows up. then have it re-built balls to the wall. I want a full manual VB and I have a ratchet shifter ready to go in...

BTW, if anyone wants a full drag transbrake 400, i got one for sale now... :D

i really just want to be able to ride throught the gears, but getting rid of the tv cable is a plus, what would you recommend me doing?...if it is required to pull the trany to change the VB in the 700, then i think i`ll just look at buying the shifter

is compression braking something that comes in the 700r4s anyway? like i down shift, and the truck slows down? is that something the VB in the 700r4 already has?

You DONT need to pull the tranny to put it in.

You wont have compression braking unless you pay the extra $200+ for it, it wasnt worth it enough for me to get it so I didnt.

you might try Redneck Transmission Supply on ebay. I am going to get a VB for my th400 from them. They offer a reverse-manual "offroad" version of their VBs that is compression-braking-capable. Cheaper than Carr or TCI too... if they have a 700R4 one.
