New guy here with a 90 K5

First time welder... I'll post some pics after I butcher attempt this job. :haha:

Thanks for the welcome! I'm for sure a noob, so I'll soak up all the knowledge I can!
We're all "noobs" of varying intensity. The only way to learn is to dive in.

I started my build about 2 years ago as a noob. But with the help of the guys here, look at me now! I'm further I debt, my HOA hates me, and my truck still ain't done.

All kidding aside, great looking truck. You should start a build thread to document your progress. I'll follow along.

Can that plate be flux welded?
Gas is the way to go. You do not have to wire brush or chisel off the flux. It is an investment up front for a Co2 or Co2/Argon tank and regulator but in the long run it is a time saver and it produces better welds. This is especially true if you ever weld body panels. Practice...practice...practice. Welding is as much an art as it is a mechanical function. If you have some old steel bed frames laying around they make good steel to practice on. YouTube has numerous videos on welding and they will get you started faster than reading a manual. Experience is the best educator so get to it.

Also, the Harbor Freight welders are functional but not the best way to go. In a pinch they work but for consistent welding results an established name brand welder will service you better and longer. I have a Harbor Freight that is a backup welder to my Hobart.

I just had to weld in New body panels on my wife's Explorer. The Harbor Freight welder was not cutting it for this job. My Hobart was a dream once I started using it to weld in the body panels. The trigger on the HF welder was very inconsistent. Sometimes it would not start right away and other times it would keep feeding wire out when I released it.
