Just bought myself and 84/85 K5 last night. Not to sure on the year yet. New to the 4X4 community and need some good help. this is what I know. has a 350 engine, 35" tires and a removable top. haha. What I need help with, took her to a local 4x4 mechanic and was told i need to replace a "drag arm", oil leak from up high. (HUH?) and that theres tranny fluid comming out of the rear shaft seal, understandable. I have no clue on what a drag arm is and what a "high oil leak" is? and help is greatly appreciated.

Bryce.

"Valve cover Gasket" sounds similliar to what mechanic said.
I have not a clue where that is though.....
So that would be the tie rod betweent the Pitman arm and the steering arm at the axle? if I grab that whole piece, and twist back and forth theres a lot of play...
this is probably what makes the car steering kind of "wander" or "loose"??

thanks for the help.

Yes Some Literature would be nice!!! Hahaha.
The Tierod (what I'm going to call it) does rotate passenger to driver side about a 1/4 turn, maybe less. there isn't any clicking and grinding that i can hear, it does seem really greased up though....

this is gonna be a project and a half, I can tell already LOL

Yea I'm not gonna give up! i wanna learn all I can about it! always wanted a big 4X4 like this and igot my hands on a good one it seems! I'm sure im gonna have a few more questions later on. Ordered my Strut and the Valve gasket seal which will probably be done next week.

thanks all!!

Yes, just keep reading. If you have a question on something, run a search and read up. You will NOT find anymore information on these things anywhere else. The library here is HUGE! Just be patient and enjoy!

So I replaced My Valve Cover Gaskets Early today and gave here a good cleaning! Cigarette butts and cartareges up the wazzu in there LOL.

Wondering of there is anything i should check out that you die hards know about? down most of the typical overhaul you can do for a truck, but wondering of theres any little secrets?

Did some browsing on, 4 speed conversions, (Currently have a 3 speed Auto) and adding Tach's to the board.
if you have or know some links greatly appreciated.

Driving home from work today and got some pretty bad vibartions, all over. center console, rear window, back bench everything was shaking! only happening while accelerating, and increases with shaking with the more i accelerate. Possibly U Joints? or just need to get to the Tierod at the steering arm section??

Thanks for any help!

If its shaking that bad you need to figure out what it is. Could be a u joint. did you change anything right before the shaking started

Haven't changed anything. My dad was trying to figure out what the 4 Wheel drive was and what everyday driving should be.
I have the options of Lo Loc, Lo, Nuietral, Hi, Hi Loc. I've been driving it in Hi, cause I didnt know what else to put it in and thats how it was when i got it.
Checking all the joints and what not as we speak....

Replaced the Valve gasket Covers but that wouldn't cause shaking and vibrations....

Every day driving should be done in Hi not Hi loc, you have a 203 which is a full time transfer case. In Hi the t case has a differential, which allows different speeds to the front or rear but does not maintain full power to both the rear axle and front axle. Hi Loc will lock out the differential action so that you will have the same power going to the front and rear axles, not allowing for any slip

Hope that helps a bit, leave it in Hi, Hi loc is for off road

I think the year is off here. he posted it as 84/85, but it has a 3 speed auto and at least the shifter plate for a 203.
just an observation:thinking:

Thats what i was wondering 1BEATK5, the papers say an 85 K5, the previous owner said its a crate 350 3 Speed. Ive ony gone through 3 speeds since driving it around town. it also has locking hubs, which were definilty put in, definitly not stock.

Tach is easy just pop out th insert in the unused hole. Then one of those 2.5 inch tachs wil fit inside if you pull the outer ring off.

For a four speed your gonna need a 700r4 tranny.

This is some of the pics i Have

Hey take a pic of the transfer case from behind (where the rear driveshaft attaches)

Also a pic of the transmission pan from underneath... We will be able to tell you what you got behind your 350 then. :D

OH and welcome to the K5 club! Truck looks really nice!
