New LED Headlights for 89-91 models

My search for component 150 mm bulbs was thin + expensive...

There were more options in the past.... Supplies dried up.

European spec Hella lights were expensive+ hard to find . . . . I wanted 100 or 150 watt PIAA bulbs in a Hella or Cibie crystal glass housing..

LMC....Chinese...pass

Lots of options for 4" x 6". Lights.....pondered putting four of these in my 1990 Silverado Blazer., Figured that sanding + cutting the plastic Bezels would give room for bigger lights

As I recall, research showed the reflectors in the 150 mm bulb, were a compromise compared to the larger sized lamps.
I went down the rabbit hole on the 150mm lights. Found a couple threads via google about being able to modify stock sealed beams. As it turned out the actual light bulb came out of the reflector with surprising little effort.

The opening was enough to mock up a H4 incandescent bulb and led version. Both were big enough either bulb touched the inside of the lens. There wasn’t any solid way to attach the bulb to the reflector either. It’s pretty much when I scrapped the whole idea for brighter 150mm bulbs and started looking for a Cheyenne core support for the 4x6 bulbs.

It appeared that the Silverado radiator support would accommodate larger headlight buckets being attached...

Modifying the bezels seemed to be the real challenge

That would be the tough spot getting the bezels to look right.

The real question is how big the buckets are for 4x6 lights. The 150mm light buckets are adding almost 1/4" on all sides, so you would need something like 4.5x6.5 to run the lights. Based on measurements I just made, trimming just the flat plastic in the back only buys about 1/4" total in each direction (as shown with yellow lines). Moving the cut further forward may work (the lights should be deeper and will need to come forward), but the 150mm lights are almost touching to begin with and the centers on the core support are still the same distance. IMO, needing to pull the headlight surround to access the adjusters would probably be OK.

I got a response from the eBay seller that they are modified sealed beams (not an aftermarket back half), 80W/7200 lumens for the pair, so 40W each. That's a lot of light. But now I'm more interested in figuring out the mod.

I had procured a set of 4 X6 headlamps for the GM hardware...... It definitely needed some longboarding to enlarge the holes and keep them rectangular...

Plastic moves fast..... just hand work in the body shop.

Any pictures? Did you get far enough to determine if standard GM 4x6 buckets could fit?

Yes, it's pretty easy to get the halogen bulb out of the sealed beam. Just cut/pry the foam seal off the back, remove 1 screw and pull. The difficulty in modding one will be finding a short enough bulb. It's 2 3/8" from the back of the housing to the back of the glass. The hole is about 5/8" square. The factory filament is about 1" from the back opening. (This is a 4703. 4701 assumed similar).

Only bought the parts for mock up.... Edges of bezel have to be sanded off ... Center divider may.have to be removed.

Headlamp adjustment may be hindered depending on how much material you remove. Worst case scenario, the bezels have to be removed to adjust head lights.

No, I never put the parts all together on the radiator support.....the support could be cut to fit..

Wild card is how deep the bezel sits on the headlamps.....

Lost enthusiasm to finish project.....house, land, Jeep, Range Rover have been my focus to move forward on....

Would like to transplant the Cummins 3.9 into the Range Rover.....

So I know these are 4x6" and I have been considering the 7" round for my beast.

Anyway take a look

Wes

Hella & Cibie have made glass composition lights in 4 x 6 , big square, 7" round, 5" or so round, and formerly 150mm square...

The 150 mm have a very low demand and went out of production by the big guys, as my past search discovered....

The 150mm lights had a very limited area for a quality reflector.... That + technology may have been some of the reason 150 mm headlights disappeared very quickly...

I had round European Cibie lights years back & was thrilled with the performance...7" reflectors should be insane with good bulbs

My Dad put euro spec Cibie 7”round lights in our Nomad. He always raved about how good they were.

I will say this moving to even Amazon 5x7 composite housings that have projector units inside combined with Led bulbs the difference compared to 150mm lights even on relays with hood voltage was a remarkable change.

Don’t get me wrong the 4 light front end is a great look with the 150mm lights but I couldn’t get over the crappy output. More power to you all trying to keep them and get better output. I was willing to sacrifice the look for lights that were more common to get.

I have the Hella 7" round in my dune buggy, with h4 bulb 50 and 65w, can't say that much about them. Very little night time driving.

Here's a nice diagram of the standard bulb sizes: http://www.autolumination.com/bulb_reference.html

Basically what comes out of the 150mm sealed beam is pretty close to an H1, but the base seems to be exactly the same as an H3.

I'm convinced conversion H3 bulbs are what the ebay seller is using. He confirms you can replace the bulb by removing the screw and then resealing when done. So if you can live with the filament being about 0.3" further back in the reflector, and you have room behind the bucket, all you need is a wiring adapter and you're upgraded. The Wagner/Philips housings are very durable and only $10 each (or free because they're already on your truck).

I may have to try this on this dead bulb just to see the beam pattern. Let's face it, it was never good to begin with.

But now I'm wondering what's different between the H4701 and H4703 and how do you get different beam patterns with conversion bulbs?

I ran Cibie 5" European lights in my older BMW ...
Lights were insane for the lumens the produced.
The quality of the reflectors+ leaded glass makes a difference in optical clarity.

You won't be disappointed with either Cibie or Hella lamps + PIAA bulbs.

I'm thrilled with the difference between running OEM bulb, and the upgrade to PIAA bulbs.
PIAA is pricey, but a hi quality product.

Here's how the bulb is aimed in the sealed beam20230629_132911.jpg

Here's another offering using H3 bulbs. These obviously aren't the Philips housings and the listing is kind of contradictory whether it comes with LED or can take an LED. I think they're sharing pictures, but 1 pair with halogens is $69 and the same with LED is $85 (maybe?) Seems like the same unit replaces H4701 and H4703, so that's kind of suspect.

Has anyone put any more effort into the quad 4x6 setup? Thats intriguing as it seems like its close to possible

Something looks different with these headlights. Are these maybe 4x6’s?
