New Tow Rig

I need to get a job where you work so I can afford all these cool toys.

sorry for the hijack, but what are the rocks I saw on FB for?

Star wheel all the way towards the engine, AFC slid forward #100-plate and smoke screw turned in 3/4's of a turn today and straight piped

Let me know how this works out for ya'. I was planning on getting a TST power kit once I get my gauges in but have given second thoughts to the "free" power lately.

It has a good amount more power, smokes VERY little .

I ordered the 4000 rpm GSK and a TST AFC spring kit as well as 60lbs valve springs today should be here about the time I have to go back to work

nice. you know the only time I lost 5th gear in a nv4500, was 400 miles into a 2300 mile road trip through the mountains mostly on I-25 through MT, WY, CO in January, trying to outrun a blizzard that was closing the highway. that pretty well sucked donkey dick

I don't want to hijack your thread but while we're on the 5th gear issue.... I noticed I can do 55 in 4th at about 2100rpm or I can do 55 in 5th at about 1600-1700rpm. Is that still considered lugging it?
I'm concerned about lugging it while towing in 5th but I don't exactly want to sit there at 2100+ rpm the whole time either.

I'm thinking I just need some 33's so I can leave it in 4th :)

1600-1700 is too low. are you talking about on the freeway? why would you be going 55? Just bring it up to 60-65 mph and you'll be in the sweet spot, 1800-2000 rpm. you can run them at whatever speed you want it's not going to hurt anything. its just not "ideal" fuel efficiency. I mean it'll run on the governor all day long if you want.

Towing around here is 55mph max no matter the setup. I can get away with 60mph or a little above but beyond that you're pushing it.
I just heard "lugging" in 5th under load (towing) is what causes the 5th gear nut to back off but I wasn't sure what was considered lugging in 5th.
So just keep it above 1800 in 5th and I should be cool.

weird. so if you have a trailer hooked. even a car trailer you can't go faster than 55? wow major league ghay.

anyways keep it over 1800 in any gear. I'd shade to keep it higher while towing actually. 2100 would be fine. Ideally you want to be running at or near peak torque while its working. peak Tq on a 6B is generally 1950-2250 rpm. now if its unloaded and you want to run for mpg. then drop it down a bit while cruising. stay out of boost.

Ok, I run 1500-1700 while in traffic a lot but once things get rolling I'm at 2100 in 5th. I'll try to keep the rpm's up if possible, sometimes it's just hard when traffic is rolling inconsistently in the mornings.
Yeah if you have something hooked to the back of your truck it's 55 regardless of what it is.
I'll just leave it in 4th when towing then. I can do 55 at 2100 which still leaves me a couple hundred rpm if I need to speed up a little.

Sorry for the hijack of your thread yellowk20, at least it was kind of on topic. :)

your truck must have 3.55's Mine has 4.10's and tops out at 85th in 5th

Yep, that is CA Ghey.:doah:
There are some setups that I would not want running more than 55mph but come on leave room for some common sense.
By regulating everything like this you eliminate common sense and people lose the common sense after a while.

4000 GSK ,60# valve springs, AFC spring kit arrived today along with my my Snap-On 6bt Kit !!!!

4" turbo back MBRP exhaust is on its way.

Also found out my truck is a Cab and Chassis truck, so no stock bed for me. Looks like I'll be keeping the flatbed and fixing it up

Never thought about this. How different are the frames? Something that can be adapted to a stock bed, or no?

yeah the frames are different, and that could be fixed easy enough.
But the rear axle is narrower , the outside duals almost line up with the front wheels, where on a regular dually the inside duals line up with the front wheels.

the spring hangers are also much closer to the frame

Put a stock bed on it, and tub the inner fenders. Stealth dualies like that are sweet!:woot:
