The great state of Denial
Hi all, my name is Warren and I live in Bozeman, MT. I just bought a 75 K5 this past Sunday and have been checking this site out for a few weeks in preparation. Now that Project Rust Bucket is here, I may be asking many questions lol. Seems to be some really good people and tons of info here and I am dang glad I stumbled onto this place.

My first question is where are good sources for body parts? I have ordered a couple of catalogs that have lots of K5 stuff but would love to find more so I can start replacing this rusted out hulk of a body as cheaply as possible. Any cool web sources, catalogs, etc that might be helpful? I mean this thing has a TON of rust and I want to get the body back in shape before tackling some of the mechanical upgrades I have planned. I am going to be desperate for weatherstripping here in a few months :doah: so any and all suggestions for sources would be welcomed.

Again, I am really glad to have stumbled into this site and I look forward to getting to know everyone in the future. Seems like a really cool group with some very, very good info.

Thanks

a membership here is $25, and prolly the best $25 you could spend on your k5, my membership ran out, about to renew, so i can have the search option once again

oh yea....welcome to ck5

check out LMC trucks, chevyduty, gmc paul...iirc, don't forget jc whitney, they sell the weatherstripping, when i ordered mine from jc whitney, it came in and was packaged softseal weatherstripping, some of the best made, it looked like softseal drop shipped it for them, i ordered a 150w amplifier from them once, it came in and was a jensen 75wx2, alot of their stuff is brandname, but they can't tell ya

Thanks for the info and suggestion. I was planning on getting the membership this payday because I am sure more than 95% of my questions will have already been answered :wink1: I really appreciate the part sources. I had found a couple of them, but chevyduty and gmc paul were new to me so I will be checking those out shortly. I just hate trying to re-invent the wheel and was hoping a few of you could shorten my google time as I bargain hunt. Thanks again and look forward to hearing of some other places I am going to learn to love for parts, etc :haha:

welcome to the site troutbum! I am living in Bozeman myself! You need some wrenchin hands let me know!

welcome aboard! and man i recently took a trip up to helena and IMO its MUCh more cost effective to buy a body and frame down here or in the desert somewhere, even with fuel and what not. those up by your are just ragged sometimes.

Wow, thanks! I do believe Blazin is correct and that this is indeed a disease. I'm glad to say that I think I am infected. Still not sure where the hell I am going to start but parts are going to be ordered on Thursday:haha:

Thanks again you two for the links and welcomes. Hopefully will have some pics of the Rust Bucket soon so you can all see just how deep in I am.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been toying with the idea of buying a donor vehicle but part of me really wants to trying doing this on my own and basically replace everything with new so it will last me 20 years. Not to mention it's an excuse to buy new tools, etc lol. I actually bought this thing up in Helena so you probably have an idea of just how ragged this beast is lol. I am almost positive I am biting off more than I will be able to chew; just need it hammered into me down the road :doah:

Welcome to CK5 Warren, It's an awesome site to say the least. Good luck with your build.

Thanks for the welcome. Dang small world! Wouldn't mind lending a hand on any projects you have going on as well. I might not be much of a mechanic, but I am dang good at buying the beer. My plan is to get this thing ready for hunting season come hell or high water so might be calling on you. :wink1: I'll give you a few days to retract your offer after I post some pics of the Rust Bucket lol.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been pretty amazed at the info I have found here so far. Look forward to learning more and getting to know the folks around here. Figure I've already gotten enough info to warrant the $25 expenditure. Been a very good learning tool for me to say the least.

hes got a point sometimes just by browsing through other areas craigslist you find parts outta your area and also find it might be worth it to either ship or drive yourself. worth lookin into before you buy new!

welcome aboard im still pretty new to this place but already ive learned so much from everyone here, best investment i have ever made into my blazer!:D

Well I am slowly learning that this project is going to be a major one. I have been calling around doing some looking. Someone sent me a very informative email saying that the new aftermarket body parts aren't as good as the old ones so I started looking around at various junkyards around the state. So far not much luck finding anything so either I need to follow the advice of buying a donor or will be stuck going with aftermarket sources. Some of the places charge more for shipping than they do the actual part (ex. front fender $63 shipping $109 with a $16 handling fee). Checked craiglist and couldn't find anything I really needed right now either but that is going to become a weekly thing to check lol. It's looking more and more like finding a donor vehicle. I did get ahold of one place that seems much cheaper and will hear back from them if they can get what I need. He is looking for used but can get aftermarket parts and the shipping is way cheaper since he is in Montana. Still wouldn't mind getting my hands on a nice donor vehicle though.....

Thanks again for all the tips and advice. Keep it coming because I need all the help I can get lol

I will get the name of the company in Michigan that deals in CAPA fenders; also stay away from companies like autoparts pro on eBay. They make their money off the shipping since eBay doesn't get a cut of shipping.

Would really appreciate the name of that company. Not having ANY luck finding ANYTHING through junkyards. Most are not carrying vehicles that old anymore because they don't have much of a demand so they just crush them I was told. Found one place in Victor, MT that might be able to get some aftermarket stuff without killing me on shipping but very limited selection. Wish I could find a donor with a nice body. Don't need the engine, trans, transfer case, etc. Gonna keep checking around and hopefully find something. I am really thankful for the input I have gotten here because it really is helping come up with a plan for reviving this old beast and restoring it to its former glory.
