Newbie swapping 350s, need tips, advice, warnings!

So, what about a pilot bearing? If there is one already there, should I trust it? How will I know if it is going to fit? I dont want to make any parts runs if I can in any way help it.

If there isn't one in the flywheel already, it needs one. You won't be able to remove the old one easily and a clutch kit should have a new none included. Install everything you can in the new motor before it gets there.

I've removed quite a few old brass pilot bushings by screwing a tap in them and keep on turning once it hits bottom--they come right out..

I tried the "hydraulic" method using grease and a tight fitting bolt or shaft pounded into the bushing to force it out,but never had success more than once that way--got my face splattered with grease every time though..they do sell special pullers to remove pilot bushings too,you can probably rent one at Autozone..

Go with the bushing, not the bearing.

If there is an old pilot bushing in there, I have had luck with the hydraulic method. The cleanest I've heard of thus far is to use toilet paper and water. Wet paper, stuff it in. Keep going until you essentially can't fit more. Use something that is a very tight fit through the hole in the bushing, and tap with a hammer one time. Add more wet TP. Repeat until it doesn't compress anymore when you tap it. Then smack the hell out of it. It didn't take many times for mine to come out. Sit back aways, even with a good fit some of the TP/water will come out, but at least it's "clean".

Can't remember what I used that was the right diameter, but a bolt won't work well since the threads can relieve pressure.

I got the hydraulic method to work once, but it's easier to buy a new flywheel and install a new bearing if you only have 4 days to get things buttoned up.

The bushing is in the crank, or did I miss something? If the "new" motor has one, no choice but to remove it if you want to replace it.

I think it's probably good practice to replace it if it's not known to already be new. I wouldn't reuse any clutch parts unless I was extremely hard up. It's just not worth the hassle to dig back into the setup once it's together, if you can afford to replace used with new.

Yea, not sure where I came up with that one, you're right. I remember taking the bushing out with the flywheel still in place. Maybe that's what messed me up.

Well, I jumped the gun with the pilot bearing... I have a Luk clutch kit and thankfully it has one included, and spline tool AND... throw out bearing... saved me about $65... weeee Hoooo!! I think I will just "rent" a puller from my parts store.... not that all those creative bearing pulling methods aren't interesting though! (and might make fun youtube vids!)

IIRC, trying to pull those is worse than the creative methods. I'm guessing a bearing might be a bit easier to use a puller on because it's steel, the oilite bushing however is likely to let the jaws slip.

And so it begins....

Yes...many extensions and u-joints works from underneath.

Doesn't the trans cover come off on those or is it fixed? I can get to the bolts easily on mine, but it's an earlier model.

I got the bottom 4 bolts ok... the dang top 2 are $%#@&!! stuck... any Ideas... shot them with PB Blast last night...

More cussing usually helps me. And a beer. Because you know you are going to bust some knuckles, and the liquid courage helps...
