I just got a 1989 k5 and it's in good condition has not been ragged on. I was driving home and the rear started to shutter a bit so I slowed down and out came the rear driveshaft. To add insult to injury the tailshaft housing snapped off the transfer case. Also where the transfercase adapter bolts up to the transmission it's broke and missing chunks. Now it still has the support brace going from the transfer case to the bellhousing. I haven't even got to play in the dirt with it yet! So what all could cuase it to grenade the transmission housing like that? There were zero leaks under it to even hint of a upcoming failure. I'm stumped I got another transmission to put in it but I'm scared to do it till I know what caused this one to explode.

G DAMN that's dirty under there. Is that your trans pan!?!?!?! Looks like something out of the Titanic

When you put it back together make sure you have GOOD motor mounts and trans mount. Also, do you have the two rods that go from the engine mount down to the trans torque converter cover? I'm glad you still have the long rod from the bell housing to T-case. Other than that, you bought a used truck with unknown history. Maybe it was destined to do that, or maybe someone beat on it like a blanketty blank blank before you got it. :D

Probably been aired and had the front driveshaft bottom out. Those cracks and breaks look impact related...

Well all the suspension bump stops are intact and actually never look like they have been touched. It was missing one of the support rods on the front and the other was not attached to the motor. I'm definitely going to be installing new poly motor and transmission mounts. The only brace that was installed and tight was the one from the side of the transfer case and the bellhousing. It was odd not having to unbolt the transfer case mounting bolts to remove it. I will get some pics later she's not pretty but ran like a champ till she decided to explode on highway 6

Is the rest of the bottom of the truck disintegrating like the aluminum on the tranny?

looks like the aluminum was eaten by corrosion and super thin .

if you live and work in the salt/ rust belt you get use to this crap .

time for a new tranny that one junk .

Well it's a texas vehicle so it shouldn't be corroded I ordered new mounts and I will be putting a new transmission in it. It's mainly just dirty underneath not to much rust on the truck.

Well hopefully I will get it all sorted out by the end of the week. I was wanting to be doing some other projects to it but everything else seems irrelevant when it has a giant inspection hole in the side of the transmission. I got another transmission for it already just need to go to pic a part and snag a support rod for the front and some bolts that were missing. I got new motor and transmission mounts on the way. I got the transfer case pulled out I put some pb blaster on the y pipe bolts might just cut it then reweld them back on later or get some long tube headers. I appreciate all the advice! Seems like a great community!

Man I can barely remember the last time I messed with a tv cable all my boxes are wifi now lol j/k. But seriously will do thanks for the reminder. I'm a bit rusty on this older technology. I had to dig out my timing light the other day then remember how to use it.

I Have seen that type of damage many times when a rear u-joint locks up or a driveshaft fails. The driveshaft acts as a big prybar on the transfer case and snaps the trans at it's weakest point. Have seen it also on the front driveshaft from double cardan joint failure or slip splines binding up.

Yep I agree we had a 6.4L F550 here at work that lost the front driveshaft and destroyed the trans and t-case. Bam instant $16,000 repair. Always unlock your hubs when on the highway.

just to be safe put new u-joints in and have the shaft spun at a drive shaft shop, don't want to put it back together and have it blow again.

No insult intended but it wasn't in 4 wheel drive was it?

It definitely was not in 4wd although after it all went kapluie I had to use 4wd or rather front wheel drive to get it off the freeway and to a parking lot to load it on a trailer. So after removing the transfer case and the transmission I found that it has the cast iron transfer case adapter and that the tranny mount was completely trashed. So glad I ordered new mounts I will be putting in new u joints and sourcing the brace and bolts that were missing. So I think the bad transmission mount may have taken its toll on the tranny and the cast iron adapter was not going to give it up.
